At the Greyfriars Charteris Centre in Edinburgh, Konishi Gaffney Architects have turned a former church into a vibrant community hub using American hard maple to bring warmth, light, and cohesion throughout the interior.

From flooring and bespoke joinery to the striking central staircase, the timber helps create bright, flexible spaces designed for gathering, learning, and reflection.

Chosen for its light colour, fine grain, and durability, American hard maple enhances the building's openness while complementing the historic stone architecture.

Its versatility allows the refurbished spaces to adapt effortlessly between co-working, community events, and quiet contemplation, demonstrating how timber can support both functional flexibility and timeless design.

Smoked oak, stone and brass in Edinburgh 🥃

A kitchen for a new extension in Edinburgh by Jones Robbins Architects, built in rich smoked oak veneer. Slatted timber panelling sits behind slim open shelves, set above a dramatic veined porcelain splashback that runs the full length of the wall. Brass handles and a brass tap add a warm glow.

The island seats three on soft green leather stools, while a wall of natural oak tall units, with long timber pull handles, balances the darker tones. Clerestory windows bring light down through the folded ceiling.

Slide the glass back and the kitchen opens straight onto the garden, where an outdoor kitchen and log store wait for long summer evenings. The same oak carries through to a media wall and built-in desk, tying the whole space together.

🏠 MARS HOUSE showcases an innovative split-level design, anchored by an impressive 18-foot ceiling basketball court, creating a variety of dynamic living spaces.

The exterior features engineered structured elements, with the upper storeys strategically set back from the street creating a sense of dimension . The façade is finished with precision, cladded with a unique patterned black metal, complemented by warm wood siding and porcelain slabs, providing a striking balance that is inviting.

Strategically placed large windows and skylights maximize natural light throughout the home, while expansive sliding doors extend the living areas onto a spacious deck. This seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces offers a tranquil retreat amid urban surroundings.

The interior construction combines clean, modern lines with natural materials, ensuring both aesthetic appeal with a warm, inviting atmosphere.
