Blu - Forever in Our Hearts

Just five days ago, one of my five dogs was called home to be with God.

I know we are only gifted these angels for a short time before He calls them back home, but Blu was special. So very special.

Back in March of 2020, I spent a brief—and I mean very brief—time volunteering at the old Atlanta shelter. The one with the concrete walls and multiple dogs to a run. I cleaned kennels, walked dogs, and knew I wanted to foster.

One day, there was a dog named Orion. He was heartworm positive, and his notes simply read, “attacked by panda.” I chose him as my foster and brought him home that day. As it turns out, Blu was the beginning and end of my volunteering journey, because after only a few days, I knew he was already mine and he would be dog number 4 at home.

Blu wasn’t an easy dog. He was extremely dog-selective and came with challenges. After adopting him, I even sent him away for professional training. He became the best-trained dog, but his reactivity never completely left him.

None of that mattered to me.

I loved Blu through all of it.

He taught me patience. He taught me loyalty. He showed me a level of unconditional love that I don’t think any human ever has. I was never going to give up on him.

I’d somewhat lost my innocence as a sports fan over the years - working “in the industry” professionally, perhaps “maturing” a bit, oh and my teams never ever winning also probably has something to do with it. This Knicks run is the most fun I’ve ever had rooting for a team. Likeable players swishing & dishing, insane comebacks, funny imitations (but not in a mean way at all) of certain voices, @vohit4rohit paying a witch on Etsy to make sure we won a game (it worked). Talking to my dad after every game - half celebrating, but also half complaining/arguing about what we *should* be doing on offense tho… it’s natural. I may have booked a “just in case” flight to NYC for the Finals - I had hope(!?). I mean damn, I just made an Instagram reel, this is a highly irregular situation. Major major shouts to @leftcoastknicks for building our own domicile out here. Orange & Blue skies baby 🟧🟦📈
