It’s hard to put into words how special the month of June was. In late February, I received an email inviting to a 5-week fellowship at the @mdocs.skidmore Storytellers Institute at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. Receiving the invitation felt surreal, like a dream had quietly found its way to me.

The weeks leading up to my departure were some of the most challenging of my life. There were many amazing things happening, yet I was still struggling to find joy. Arriving at Skidmore gave me the space to reset in ways I didn’t know I needed. The amount of care that director @daeshadevonharris poured into every aspect of the residency was incredible. She created an environment where true rest could exist alongside meaningful community and gave us all this rare and beautiful gift. The generosity of the staff, the other visiting fellows, and the students allowed me to release the pressure I had been carrying and simply be present.

I took daily walks through the woods, shared meals in the dining hall, exchanged ideas and learned about other people’s projects and processes. My parents came to visit on the weekends, as did my love, @dokyi. Surrounded by so much care, I was reminded to continue trusting the unseen forces that guided me there. This residency gave me back a part of myself, rekindling my sense of purpose and creative spirit. It also reminded me that the work we do is inseparable from the communities that hold us. I left with immense gratitude for the genuine connections I made and a deeper desire to continue nurturing community back home in Brooklyn.

There is something deeply healing about being seen, not only in our work, but in our journeys, and about witnessing others in theirs. What a profound privilege. Thank you to @daeshadevonharris, @jhwake21, @harjant.gil for taking the time to see all of us, and for everything you do to make @mdocs.skidmore Storyteller’s Institute such an incredible place.
