4 years ago my mom and I had the idea of creating a ballet to tell the stories of the women she served who are in recovery from substance use disorder. Now, we are two weeks away from opening night. “Where We Meet” is an art and social advocacy project between FALL and Healing Housing that has come to life through the lived experiences of those at Healing Housing. Under the brilliant artistic direction of Rebekah Hampton Barger, we have worked closely with the women through writing workshops, focus groups, and movement sessions to ensure that their experiences are the focal point of this piece. The stewardship of fellow artists have transformed these stories into a production meant to be felt on a visceral level.

The importance of this project is trifold: 1) using the medium of dance to convey lived experiences; 2) de-stigmatizing addiction by showing how it is a by-product of systemic failures, inequities, and trauma; 3) demonstrating the power of art and social services in working together to achieve a common goal.
