With Typeknitting, I work in two very different contexts: the type/design side, focussed more on visual, communicative aspects. And the knitting side, always curious for practical projects. Sometime, both come together: When I first talked to Kay Gardiner of MDK about a possible workshop, she mentioned she’d had a few ideas using my typeface Knit Hello #knithello. Little did I know about the epic scale Kay was thinking of. She knitted a name tag for every single one of the 101 vendors of Nash Yarn Fest. During the festival, you could see Knit Hello peeking out everywhere! I am still blown away so see a resonance of such scale and personal power. Here are a few photos of many people I have never met, yet feel like I did.

Later Kay wrote me, „I feel like knitted name tags are now a must for any proper gathering of knitters.“ - I agree!

Thanks again Kay and everyone at @modern.daily.knitting

If you want to see some of Kay’s and Ann’s other epic projects, they will be KEYNOTE SPEAKERS at @vogueknittingonline NYC 2007.
Or come to the next @nashyarnfest on March 12 and 13, 2027.

🎉 Nashville, here we come!

We’re so excited to share that Upland Fiber Co. will be vending at Nash Yarn Fest for the very first time, March 12–13, 2027!

This one feels especially exciting for us. Nashville will officially be the furthest we’ve ever traveled for a fiber festival, and we can’t wait to bring Upland—and our American-grown, farm-to-skein yarns—to a whole new part of the country.

One of our favorite things about traveling to festivals is getting to meet the people behind the names and little squares we see online: talking yarn, seeing what you’re making, catching up with old friends, and making plenty of new ones along the way. We’re so excited to expand our horizons a little farther south and introduce Upland to a whole new community of makers. 🧶💚

Nashville, we’ll see you in March! 🤠

Swipe to see some behind-the-scenes of The Kiawah Sweater making progress ➡️

🧶 And remember, there’s still time to join the Rhinebeck Crochet Sweater Make-Along launching September 1st!

Together we are going to work up the Kiawah Sweater for our trips to the hills of NY Sheep and Wool this October.

#crochetsweaterpattern #kiawahsweater

For my sweater, I used DK Weight yarn from @thewanderingflock.

The most underrated part of any project, in my opinion, is cakeing up my skeins. Yarn can look so different in a skein, a ball, and then swatched up.

I love putting on a good tv show and diving into the prep work of a new WIP.

It feels like the first steps in a long process of finally bringing an idea to life.

I was on a crazy deadline for this sweater because I wanted to launch it at @nashyarnfest 2026.

Every commute became my stitch time.

If I wanted this done for Nash Yarn Fest, every train ride was studio time too.

What is it about that second sleeve that gets me every time?

🧶 This sleeve I ended up putting on backwards!

Luckily, I threw in a lifeline and was able to frog it back and reattach it.

Sometimes rushing sets you back hours, and taking breaks needs to be part of my process.

Lesson learned the hard way: it’s always better to pause and approach it with a clear head.
