Last month, I sat down with Dr David Gange from @whymetalmatters and @nat_sabbath at Let’s Build An Alternative Network to talk about their photography and journalism project People of the Pit🤘🏻

These are two of the most hard-working, head-banging people in the city and it was such a honour to really get into how this project is influencing our local music scene.

And now, we’re doing it all over again. 👀

On the 27th of August, @djmillabong and I will be back at @thenightowlbham for the next Let’s Build An Alternative Network event, and this time, I’ll be sitting down with @missozwell!

Chloe Ozwell is an incredible and seriously versatile local vocalist, and if you were at Legacy of a Madman, you might have already caught Chloe doing what she does best… 🎤

Life has been such a whirlwind since these photos were taken. Back on may 14th at the Gatecreeper show in vancouver i met this couple, Nat and Mike, Visiting from Birmingham UK. We became friends very quickly and i luckily got to see them again the next day at the Spectral Wound show. I Was devastated I may never get to see them again so saying goodbye at the end of the show was bittersweet. When I got home I remembered my friend was hosting a BBQ of all metalhead friends the next day so I invited them out so they could meet my friends.
Everyone love them, Kris ended up offering to drive them out somewhere that would otherwise require a rental like whistler.
They took him up on the offer so he invited me out (and tyler but he decided not to go) and i had an amazing time, was my first time going out on day trip with just friends. (i also started realizing how well kris and I got along/ clashed in just the right ways So that was definitely when feelings started really manifesting).
Went out one last time with Nat, Mike and Kris for sushi before the brits had to fly home.
Its rare for me to make friends in get along with so well so fast and we have continued to talk since that one week in may i really glad i got to meet them and hopefully will get to see them again at some point.
Since all this happened Ive gotten very very close with Kris, had to break up with Tyler because i realized how unhealthy our relationship had become after 9 years, it wasn’t horrible but it had soured and become passive, spent a month helping Kris get the @vancouverdethbus setup for AMF, got to go to my first @armstrongmetalfest /first camping festival in general, Parents sold the house I’ve live in for almost 20 years and had only 2weeks to pack everything up, currently staying with my uncle trying to figure out a new job and Housing. Theres so many more nuanced things that have happened but its been a wild three months. @nat_sabbath

Join us TONIGHT - for an evening of metal, punk, goth, emo, and alt talks and networking.

(So this might be the strangest picture of me ever taken, but it is in a good cause.)

Tonight is the beginning of season 2 of Building an Alternative Network at The Night Owl. These events, moved from Thursdays to Wednesdays, now have two wonderful co-hosts, DJ Millabong (Brum Radio) & Rosie Miranda Rivers (Disloyal Order).

Doors at 6.30.

There'll be four interviews with musicians, events organisers, and other industry insiders.

Nat Sabbath and I will be talking about our project People of the Pit, which chronicles the current Birmingham grassroots metal scene. It celebrates small venues and the people who keep them running - from bands to promoters to the faces seen repeatedly in crowds. It aims to be a corrective to the way Birmingham's metal heritage can sometimes be celebrated at the expense of the amazing creativity that's going on right now. So we want to show what ties that heritage and the current scene together.

As always, there'll be chances for anyone who wants to plug their event, release, or service to take the mic between interviews. And as always the lovely Night Owl crew will keep us well looked after.

It's great to see these events, at which I've met so many amazing people, growing. Please do come along and be part of it! There's no better way to find out what's going on in your city.

We are so pleased to announce that A Celebration of Midlands Metal has raised £750 for @heavymetaltherapy!

Thank you for all of your support whether you played in a band, spoke on the panel, brought tickets, entered the raffle, took photos on the night, created silly content, donated a raffle prize or just turned up and threw yourself in the pit. This really was a true community effort!

🍸Hats off to Alex and the Birmingham Cocktail Weekend team for a class programme, launched at Hotel du Vin earlier this evening supported by el Jimador tequila. A super valuable asset for F&B reminding us of the world class mixology in our city.

💥A standing ovation for Callum, Ross, Anna, Anna, and Josh - as well as Ed, Kitty, Chris and the panellists - for a truly excellent first ever edition of Breakout at Dead Wax Digbeth. So many inspiring music heads in the place. Absolutely certified, and a strong foundation for future events.

Tonight: a very special midweek mosh as I hand over playlist duties to the lovely @nat_sabbath and @whymetalmatters.

These two people are some of the nicest people in the scene, and if you’ve been privileged enough to chat to them then you’ll have seen the passion and dedication they have to documenting the Midlands Metal scene whether that’s through photography, words or just chats at the front of the crowd when you’re waiting for the next band.

They use the show to formally introduce their project “People of the Pit” which aims to showcase the people behind the scenes who make the West Midlands metal scene so special.

So glad they got to play some heavy metal of their choice on tonight’s show, and yes we do close out the show with an 8 min long doom face melter. Did we have to cut all the features to do it? Yes. Does radio need rules? No.

As a ✨woman ✨ I have so many thoughts around International Women’s Day. This day to many of us is a mere band-aid to cover up the atrocities women experience day to day just by existing.

However; I do believe that today is a day of celebrating women and gender non conforming/non binary people, in the many facets of our beings. We aren’t “just girls” We are l: business owners, creatives, leaders, teachers, we are the blueprint. We are inspirational. We are intentional, thoughtful, careful, loving, caring, we are passionate, enthusiastic and dynamic, we are shape-shifters who constantly are forced to fit ourselves in to boxes day in day out.

To all of my women and female presenting folk, I see you, you hold more power than you know!

Please follow every creative I have tagged in this post, I can tell you first hand the work they do within this scene is exemplary. I am proud to know each and every one of you whether we’ve met at a gig, yapped on my radio show or I’ve seen you on social media!

Also a note: There are non binary people in this post, I asked their permission before featuring them in a post that included the word “woman/women” if you’re a person who thinks non binary people don’t belong on a post like this, let me know so I can block you. Thanks!
