The level of artistry that shows up on our stage is always a topic of conversation in the various group chats at intermissions in the lobby, between sips of complimentary wine.
Hiring local is a priority of us. Supporting the local economy is important to us and the investment in the well-being of our arts ecosystem. The Bay is full of talent and we are proud to support the artists that bring life to our communities. You will see many familiar faces and that's on purpose.

"As Oakland’s always-innovative West Edge Opera gears up for the 2026 season in August, two of its choices this year look back in time to spotlight the lives of people who defied society’s rigid sexual categories—and were, to an extent, erased." -Janis Hashe for Eastbay Express

The Black Motherhood and Parenting New Play Festival has always celebrated the stories of Black families and boasted that our partner theaters have Black women and Black MOTHERS in some sort of leadership role. We’ve followed Hana Sharif @hana_s_sharif from The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis to Arena Stage, where both organizations became partner theaters for our festival under her Hana’s leadership.

On Friday, we learned of Hana’s departure and resignation from Arena Stage, effective Tuesday, June 30th. We’ve been thinking a lot about the panel during our inaugural season of #BMPFest in 2021, with Hana, Nataki Garrett @natakigarrett (then of OSF), Teresa Coleman Wash of Bishop Arts, our Co-Creator, Garlia Cornelia Jones @garliacornelia and Nicole Brewer @antiracisttheatre , who served as Moderator.

Black Motherhood was held in that conversation for all that it is and coupled with the responsibilities and weight of being a Non-Profit Arts Leader of Color, it is important to add Black Mother to that description. It is that hat, which Hana wears with great seriousness, and one that cannot be overlooked.

We uplift Hana’s incredible work as an artistic leader in the American Theatre. We have witnessed the passion Hana has for artists and new work in addition to her being a Black mother. Every interaction with Hana was caring and generous. She knows and uplifts artists and is a model for artistic leadership that is human-centered, balancing motherhood and her artistic work. That is never easy, and exactly why working with Hana was something our team looked forward to. She was personally very excited about the plays that her theaters were partnered with over the years.

We will follow Hana anywhere. She is our audience. She is our community.

👉🏾SWIPE to hear Hana in her own words👈🏾

WEO Stories is a blog series where we take a deeper look into the stories behind our season. This edition: The Man Behind the Gods, explores the discovery of the sketches that lead currator Nathaniel Silver of a history changing journey.

Sargent kept 1 painting for himself. A work that took 3 years, was never displayed and hung in Sargent's private studio.

This is Thomas McKeller. A bell hop who became muse and model for famed painter John Singer Sargent. Sargent worked on this painting for 3 years but it was never exhibited during his lifetime. It wasn't a commission. "It was a painting he made for himself."

Thomas McKeller became the model figure, as seen in these sketches for paintings of Gods, Atlas and the Hesperides (1922-25) and Chiron and Achilles (1921).

Sargent's works graced museum walls all over the world. Thomas's identity wasn't recognized until a curator found these sketches in a museum file cabinet and chased curiosity.

Its a classic example of the "Power of the Pen" and Who gets to tell the story.

Our production of Damien Geter Lila Palmer's American Apollo this summer explores this complex relationship.
