⭐ MEET THE ARTISTS: Alison Price-Rom & Ben Salmon ⭐

Alison Price-Rom (@alisonpricerom) is an illustrator and watercolorist with a background in art, literature and education. In addition to painting, she has a long-standing interest in book illustration. Her paintings and illustrations often have a global focus due to a career in international education and development that has involved travel to destinations like Armenia, India, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

Alison works primarily with watercolor and sometimes ink and paints people in a variety of settings, as well as still life and landscape.

She studied drawing and painting at the Art Students League in New York and illustration at the School of Visual Arts continuing education program. She is also a graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University, where she completed an Ed.D. in International Education, and the University of Washington where she completed an MA in International Studies.

⭐ MEET THE ARTISTS: Shara Bailey & Sue B Pottery ⭐

Shara Bailey (@sharabaileyfineart) is a representational artist with a lifelong fascination with the way light can transform mundane objects into things of beauty.

Although she grew up in a Philadelphia suburb, she has long been drawn to the big skies and dramatic landscapes of the American West - a passion that took her to Arizona, where she spent ten years earning a PhD in anthropology. Today she is based on the East Coast, where she is a professor at New York University.

City living has forced her to look for beauty in unexpected places. One evening, while commuting, she noticed the sunset reflected in the glass of a building across the river. That fleeting moment reminded her that beauty is everywhere if we’re willing to look. Since then, she’s sought to capture the magical in the mundane, guided by the belief that sometimes all it takes is a pair of rose-colored glasses.

Whether painting urban skylines or rural landscapes, she is drawn to scenes where light transforms space into something evocative, timeless, and quietly profound.

Sue B of Sue B Pottery (@sue_b_pottery) is a potter who has lived in Maplewood for more than 30 years and whose work is focused on usability and curb appeal. She took up pottery in November of 2016 to calm her nerves and raise money for area non profits. She says it is a joy to focus on something beautiful and useful while supporting worthy causes.

Her work focuses on how a piece feels in your hands and how it integrates into your home. It’s art you can touch. People who have purchased her work tell her that they have decorated rooms around a set of espresso cups or a large bowl that they especially love.

100% of her sales go to non-profit organizations including the MEND Hunger Relief Network and the ACLU.

Barbara Schneider (@barbaraschneiderart) has been drawing and painting her whole life, but only started painting in earnest since retiring in 2022. She is largely self-taught and enjoys painting the beauty she sees around her: nature, people, still life, landscapes, and recently tried her hand at portraiture.

Barbara is sometimes inspired by surroundings when she is traveling on vacation and likes to experiment with new and different techniques.

In her younger days Deb Stamm was always sketching. She took art classes in college and graduated from the University with an Art Minor. During her years as a working Mom, her painting occurred periodically. She worked in watercolor or acrylics. She started painting more often after painting Curious George in her grandson’s nursery. She also did Christmas tree bulbs and some of his favorite game characters.

Deb was awarded three Honorable Mentions for acrylic painting by the Union County Senior Art Exhibit. She belongs to a group of artists meeting two days a week to create art and talk. The social nature and insight from the group is important to developing her paintings.

⭐ MEET THE ARTISTS: Monica Mangan & Lisa Orloff ⭐

Monica Mangan (@monicamanganart) is a self taught mixed media artist. Her work is an exploration of the intricate interplay between color, form, and narrative, representing the essence of everyday life through her own vivid lens. The hope is to celebrate the mundane and the extraordinary, where each piece tells a unique story, infused with personal and collective experiences. Her pieces draw inspiration from her connections with music, nature, travel and the human form.

Using a mixed media approach and in the spirit of experimental play and spontaneity, Monica
incorporates collage elements with acrylics to juxtapose textures and patterns, emphasizing the interconnectedness of our experiences. The use of found materials serves to ground her pieces in the tangible to foster joyful emotional connections.

In her process, she seeks to find and reveal the extraordinary in the ordinary and to embrace the vibrant tapestry of life.

-------

Following her brain surgery 17 years ago, Lisa Orloff (@lisasartforjustice) learned with apprehension, followed by joy, about neuroplasticity, the remarkable ability for a brain to reorganize its structure rerouting neural pathways. Simply put, her synapses were firing away over a different path creating a new her!

Art brings her joy and diffuses the frustration of working within our criminal (in) justice system while working with federally incarcerated clients.

Lisa starts by squeezing acrylic paint to a canvas from the tube and shaping it with palette knives for movement and texture. After it dries, she traces the ridges with an acrylic pen, then creates her own path beyond the original to mimic neuroplasticity.

After the tragic loss of her best friend’s son during the spring, the season of renewal, she began painting abstract daffodils, bursting forth in unexpected spots, popping up bright and tall like Sam.

The Pierro Gallery at The Baird Community Center is proud to present Judy Targan: A Life in Art, a major retrospective celebrating the extraordinary eight-decade career of South Orange artist Judy Targan.

The exhibition will serve as the Pierro Gallery’s featured exhibition during this year’s SOMA Studio Tour, an especially meaningful distinction as Targan was one of the founders of the beloved community tradition.

Spanning work from the 1940s through the present day, the exhibition traces Targan’s artistic evolution from her early drawings and paintings created as a student at New York City’s progressive Walden School through her children’s room murals, limited-edition relief prints, inkless intaglio works, and her current Landscapes/Landshapes oil paintings on wood.

⭐ MEET THE ARTISTS: John Sahin & Helen Vasiliades ⭐

John Sahin (@johnsahin_) is a Turkish-born Concept Artist and Art Educator based in SOMa. In addition to teaching the next generation of artists at One River School in Millburn, John has produced production art for a variety of film projects and games, including A Race to the Reckoning Docuseries and HBO’s Barney’s World.

As a voracious reader and lover of all cinema, he strives to pull real-world research into every project, no matter how fantastical the subject matter. John draws inspiration from a diverse range of sources, including Neolithic cave paintings, mechanical schematics and the great illustrators of the 20th century and today, namely Jean (Moebius) Giraud, Kim Jung-Gi and Eyvind Earle.

Never without a sketchbook, he spends his days collecting images, hoping to apply his observations to future world building. From the breezy streets of Venice to his own sofa, the sound of a scratching pencil is John’s constant companion.

-------

Helen Vasiliades (@hvasiliades1) interest in photography began in the 1970s as she explored different perspectives while capturing images of her growing family. Before long, she sought to expand her subjects and artistic expression.

In her travels, she has been fortunate to have had the opportunity to record and preserve the character of various locations, people and wildlife. As a member of several photography associations, Helen’s work was entered into exhibitions and juried shows, winning many awards along the way. Whether using film or digital photography, she enjoys experimenting with techniques and depicted moods.

Though her family is now grown, her love of photography continues unabated.

Donna Ritter (@Donna_Creates) has had a love affair with fiber since age 8 when she received her first embroidery sampler. She sees the world in terms of fiber, everything & everyone woven and stitched together.

Her work engages with the tactile and the visual. It is meant to be used, touched, felt. Color and pattern evolve as she makes a piece; everything she makes is unique. Weaving is not only color and pattern, it also evokes movement: passing the shuttle through the threads, stepping on the treadles, the unfolding of a pattern on the loom, and the eye traveling through a piece.

Donna enjoys weaving with wire & metal to make jewelry and is moving into woven metal not only as adornment. As she evolves as an artist, Donna has done more with tapestry and needle felting, woven metal sculptural forms, and other forms of basketry. At her studio you'll encounter all things fiber!

Have you ever wanted to try weaving? You will have a chance to weave on a simple loom when you visit her space!

⭐ MEET THE ARTISTS: Pearl Lui-Chan & Alison Oxman ⭐

"My heart raced and I gently closed my eyes as the thunderous waves pounded the sand. Though loud, I sat quietly and unafraid of Mother Nature. With a deep breath, I was fully engulfed by the warm, golden sun rays on my back. daydreamed and found comfort somewhere between scientific observation and noticing the whimsy in nature. I was maybe 5 then, full of dreams and curiosity."

Fast forward to 2024, after a corporate career of over 20 years, Pearl Lui-Chan, (Dear Daughters Design @deardaughtersdesign) made the leap to study Natural Science Illustration and earned her certificate from Rhode Island School of Design in 2026.

She started painting stories of the sea, the bees, and the caprines. The lure to capture fleeting emotions from observing nature that once flooded her mind, now flows onto her canvases. With maturity, seasonality feels brief and she doesn't want to forget a single lucky moment with Mother Nature.

Pearl is a Botanical/Wildlife Artist & Calligrapher. She launches monthly drops of Hand-Painted Moody Botanicals/Wildlife Portraits, and whimsical greeting cards at The Co-Lab in South Orange, and she teaches calligraphy & watercolor loca

Many decades ago, immigrants Rose and Bill Waldman opened a millinery store in Nyack, NY. Among the gloves, hats & handbags, they sold gorgeous costume jewelry, some of which Bill designed.

Years later, their granddaughter, Alison Oxman (Semiprecious Jewelry Designs by Alison Oxman), discovered boxes of vintage Swarovski crystals that her mother had collected after her parents had died. One holiday season, Alison created necklaces for all her female family members, using some of these beautiful beads. She discovered a hidden talent and enjoys creating affordable jewelry reminiscent of high end designs.

All of her creations are handcrafted using 14/20 Gold Filled or 925 Sterling Silver chain and Argentium non-tarnish wire. She has lived in South Orange, NJ since 2001 with her husband, Michael and sons Daniel and Nathan.
