The last time I did flowers for you was at your 70th birthday. Doing flowers for your funeral doesn’t seem real. I tried to use flowers that reminded me of you, your garden and your love of nature. I will miss you uncle Nige, my sweet loving uncle. I will hear the words you whispered to me when I think of you 💛✨

150 years of Monte. It wasn’t just a celebration, it was also a reunion. It was so great to catch up and reconnect with past colleagues, Board members, community members, families and alumni that I’ve taught over the years. I remember celebrating 125 years and it’s been a privilege to serve such an amazing community.

Today was also a day to celebrate the unveiling of the Mother Ignatius McQuoin sculpture created by the amazing Dan Dominguez.

Congratulations to everyone who helped make this day such a special one.

Last night’s big yarn-up event was spiritual, thought-provoking and inspiring. Our girls performed the “Whale Wagaji”, a dance that the girls learnt from Aunty Rayma.

“We were gifted the ceremonial dance from Yuin country by Uncle Max and learning it is an amazing enriching experience. Aunty Rayma coming to teach it to each group of Central Desert girls sustains our connection with the tradition and through her teachings we are able to pass the learning from year to year.”

Our guest speaker, Jacob Birch is an academic, entrepreneur and Churchill Fellow passionate about the native grain foodways that sustained his Gamilaraay ancestors for thousands of generations. It was so interesting to hear him speak about understanding the agronomy and nutrition of native grasses as well as the potential for cultural and community benefit.

As always, NAIDOC week at Monte is always an amazing week with the Big Yarn Up, Maruku Marketplace, teaching and learning experiences, and, the NAIDOC assembly.

Thank you to all of our guests and to those who worked so hard to make NAIDOC week Monte such a significant and profound experience for our community.

What a great Open Day! So good to meet lots of parents and kids as well as check out all of the amazing displays organised by the teaching staff. It really is a celebration of what it means to be a part of the Monte community.

Congrats to everyone involved!
