LONG POST ALERT 🚨

That little girl in the first picture was born a dreamer. Bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and so full of personality. Instilled with a creative mind, the gift to gab, a thirst for knowledge and a heart for people.

She didn’t know growing up that she’d experience, doubt, lack of self-confidence, being the last kid picked in gym class, or be bullied just for existing. She wouldn’t be the girl the boys fawned after and she’d willingly allow her kindness to be exploited over the years just to have some sense of belonging.

However, she’d grow a tough skin. Not by choice but for survival, somewhere deep inside her she knew God had something real big waiting for her. She knew that God has big plans for HIS kids. He wasn’t going to leave her empty-handed or outcast. And in His time (not hers) He did just that. I guess that’s why He chose you to be a Juneteenth baby, a physical representation of the grit and resilience of your ancestry.

Without asking or pleading, God quietly placed her in rooms for her to be seen in the purest way. Not for what she could do for others, simply for just being who He created her to be. That’s exactly what happened. People who barely knew her started to see what God had been molding and shaping all along.

I’m so grateful that, that little girl held on to the hope she wished for on that 5th birthday. She’d be so proud of who we have become. From having people lie on you, overcoming an illness that almost took you out of here, people speaking ill of you, to laughing in your face at your attempts of accomplishing your dreams: you stayed the course. And because you did, you are now surrounded by people who speak life in you even when you tap out. And you’ve been graced with opportunities that only God can get the credit for.

So on this birthday…walk into another opportunity to grow, build and love in ways you’ve never done before. God is not done blowing your mind yet.

Happy Birthday Lovelace! You’re killing it!
