Who’s your fave illustrator?
This week we are featuring the marvellous:

@phoebewahl with her iconic book Little Witch Hazel

@jennifer_falkner_illustration with her whimsical pictures in her book Fairy Forest which was written by the wonderful @sheila.knaggs

@natashacarty.studio with one of my personal obsessions The Style Secrets of Gareth McGreen which was written by the amazing @kellybrodiebrown

As always, these are all books I’d consider top notch, on both a story and art level. Make sure you get your hot little hands around them to check them out.

Zeke & Abby’s Picture Book Reviews!
(AD/GIFTED)
📚
Book Details:
* Title: The Big Cooee
* Author: Jack Carty (@jackcarty)
* Illustrator: Natasha Carty (@natashacarty.studio)
* ISBN: 9781761648441
* Publisher: Scholastic Australia
* Pub Date: 01/04/2026
📚
What we enjoyed about THE BIG COOEE:
* Firstly, the little boy and girl are just like Abby and I! (After reading this, we practised our, ‘Cooooeeeees!’ in the backyard. We got one reply over the fence!)
* Secondly, we are huge fans of rhyming, and we loved matching the rhyme to the lovely illustrations. (Especially the snapshots of the natural world.)
* Thirdly, we can’t wait to travel when we are bigger, so we lived vicariously through this boundless ‘Cooee!’
* Finally, the beautiful melodic quality that the prose had was stunning.
📚
Thank you @scholastic_au for gifting us a copy in exchange for an honest review.

A little appreciation post for @natashacarty.studio who, despite pretty much always being on a book deadline these days and juggling mum duties, still found the time to make 9 BEAUTIFUL illustrations for In The Blue Of The Day and its singles — and only complained about it a little. 🤣

I am very lucky. Thanks Tashi-beans! ❤️

(NB: the “Pyramid” and “Cactus” covers were started by me and finished by Tash, and are hence not QUITE as lovely 🥳)

We’ve been rotating these at bedtime and honestly… it’s been a really nice mix. Some giggles, some deeper chats, and a couple we’ve already reread multiple times.

📚Prickles – Phil Cummings & Jennifer Goldsmith
This one surprised me. It’s really gentle and a bit emotional in a quiet way. My 4 year old mostly loved the pictures and characters, but my 6 year old actually got the message about kindness and understanding others. One of those books that opens the door for a good little chat after.

📚Rumpelstiltskin – Mac Barnett & Carson Ellis
A bit different to the usual fairytale version, slightly quirky and a little darker in tone. My 6 year old was really into it, asked lots of questions and noticed details in the illustrations. My 4 year old listened but didn’t connect as much. Definitely one for the older end of the age range.

📚The Big Cooee – Jack Carty & Natasha Carty
Such a beautiful book visually. Both kids were really drawn into this one, especially the idea of connection. It feels calm but still adventurous. This one held both their attention the whole way through (which is saying something 😅).

📚I Am Not a Fish – Patrick Guest & Katie Abey
This was the instant favourite 😂 lots of laughs, silly moments, and easy for both ages to enjoy. My 4 year old especially loved this one and keeps grabbing it again. It’s fun but still has that “be yourself” message without being heavy.

These are the kinds of books that make bedtime feel a bit slower and nicer… even when the day’s been chaos 😅

💬 Which one would your kids pick first?

#CoverReveal

This was one of my favourite books to work on last year! Jack wrote this book after going for a walk with his kids and teaching them to call out “cooee” ... turning into a larger story about how the sound will travel around the world to visit other children. It’s a playful story about connection and humanity, which feels particularly important in the current moment. Beautifully illustrated by Natasha, with their kids as the main characters! Incredible creator perfection! Huge congratulations guys!

Do you know the term “cooee”? It comes from Aboriginal languages of south-eastern Australia (often linked to the Dharug language group around NSW). Traditionally, it was used as a loud call to attract attention or locate others over long distances in the bush.

The Big Cooee, written by Jack Carty and illustrated by Natasha Carty, takes this idea and sends it across the world—transforming it into a symbol of connection and unity.

This new picture book really resonated with my nine year old twins, who are eagerly awaiting a visit from their cousins they haven’t seen in two years, living on the other side of the world.

With gentle, glowing illustrations and a rhyme that reads beautifully aloud, it’s a story that carries both heart and hope. My only wish was for a short note in the opening or endpapers acknowledging the cultural origins of the word cooee, which holds such significance here in Australia.

Thank you to @scholastic_au for our gifted review copy.
