Today, as CAMSA continues to grow and reach new milestones, we had the opportunity to connect with both our roots and an important institution in our medical community.

We first met Dr. Fonkoua Rudolphe, President of the ONMC, to express our gratitude for his support during the 6th CAMSA GA, presenting him with a Certificate of Recognition and commemorative gifts. He encouraged young physicians to keep building and contributing to healthcare in Cameroon.

We then visited Dr. Biyouma Marcela, CAMSA Founder and 1st President, who reminded us of the value of self-engagement and starting to build our careers as early as our student years.

Representing CAMSA: Kengo Nathan, Modibo Yattassaye and Azie Emmanuella. 💙

I’m happy to share the success of one of my projects as VP for External Affairs of CAMSA - Cameroon Medical Students’ Association. Over two weekends in July, my team trained 20 participants during the first-ever CAMSA External Affairs Camp.

Being the first of its kind, it came with its challenges—but we overcame them. 💪

CAMSA’s long-term goal is to build the next generation of knowledgeable, effective leaders and change-makers. This online camp aimed to prepare medical student leaders who are skilled, motivated, and well-versed in external affairs and global health advocacy.

I’m deeply grateful to the exceptional facilitators who joined us:

· Dr. Osman Gussor (MedSIN-Sudan) 🇸🇩– Stakeholder Mapping & IFMSA opportunities
· Dr. Habib Al-Rousan (IFMSA-Jordan) 🇯🇴– Policy Making
· Nathan Ezie Kengo 🇨🇲 – Global Health & Leadership Communication
· Dr. Nkenfou Kelvine🇨🇲 – Public Relations & Communication
· Dr. Wemeguela Yossa Karen Mayeva 🇨🇲– Finances in External Affairs
· Dr. Abdourraouf Yougouda 🇨🇲– Advocacy & Think Global, Act Local
· And I had the privilege of facilitating External Affairs 101 & Essential Leadership Skills.

Bringing this from conception to implementation while delivering sessions was no small feat—but my amazing team made it possible. Thank you, Ndembe Djeni Erwan, Linda Sandjon, Inna Ali, and Manka Staicy.

A huge congratulations to all participants for your active engagement. Your motivation kept us going!

We look forward to learning from this experience and improving future editions.

🦠 VIRAL HEPATITIS: What You Really Need to Know 🗓️ July 28

What is hepatitis?

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by viruses (A, B, C, D, and E). The most common and serious forms are Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

How is viral hepatitis transmitted?

• Through blood 🩸 (unsafe blood transfusions, contaminated sharp objects)
• Through unprotected sexual intercourse 💦
• From mother to child 🤰🍼 (especially Hepatitis B)
• Through non-sterile medical or cosmetic equipment 💉 (needles, blades, tattoos, piercings)

⚠️ Hepatitis B and C can become chronic without causing any symptoms.

Viral hepatitis is NOT spread through:

❌ Handshakes
❌ Hugging
❌ Sharing food or drinks
❌ Coughing or the air
❌ Mosquito bites

Signs and symptoms 🚨 (often absent in the early stages)

• Severe fatigue 😓
• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) 👀
• Abdominal pain
• Dark-colored urine 🚽
• Loss of appetite 🤢

📍 Cameroon 🇨🇲

Cameroon has a high prevalence of viral hepatitis, particularly Hepatitis B (approximately 11.2% prevalence) and Hepatitis C, affecting more than 10% of the population overall. Viral hepatitis is considered a major public health concern due to its high burden of infection.

💊 Viral hepatitis can be prevented and treated!
• Hepatitis B: can be effectively managed with treatment.
• Hepatitis C: can be cured with appropriate treatment.
• Early screening saves lives. 🔍

🛡️ Prevention: Protect Yourself
• Get vaccinated against Hepatitis B 💉
• Practice safe sex
• Get tested regularly
• Use only sterile medical and cosmetic equipment
• Ensure the safety of transfused blood
• Prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) 🤱🏽
