Fifteen years banking with Chase. They offered him $130,000.

A bank in Panama, where he didn’t even have residency, offered him $275,000. Same man. Same credit. Different country.

He’s one of 18+ Americans we met who left the US for Panama. Some are renting, some have bought, some are still working it out.

We asked all of them the same thing: what does it actually cost, and are they better off?

Full episode is live now on our YouTube channel, PassportHeavy.

So here’s what actually happened.

I’m in the jacuzzi at sunrise… and out of nowhere, I get stung right in the lip by a bee.

First reaction was “oh shit”… then “this actually really hurts.”

Pulled the stinger out and instantly knew… this is gonna swell.

I had a full shoot that day, so I just pushed through and kept going.

Next morning… I wake up and this thing is HUGE.

Not normal swelling.

I’m talking full meme. Looked ridiculous. Felt like my lip was about to explode.

Went to the hospital.

Doctor was calm, no panic, basically treated it like it was nothing.

Gave me an antihistamine injection (big needle in the arm) and tablets to take home.

Thought I was good.

Went out that night… woke up the next morning…

Even bigger.

Back to square one.

But let me say this.

The hospitals out here are next level.

From the speed, to the care, to how calm everything felt… it just worked.

For context, this was same-day treatment.

Total cost: 2,300 THB ($65 USD)

That included:

* Doctor consultation
* Antihistamine injection
* Medication to take home
* Nurse service (for the injection)
* Medical supplies (syringe, needles, gauze)

At a top hospital in the US, this would likely run me around $1,800+ for the same level of care.

And then there was the part that really stuck with me.

The locals.

We don’t even speak the same language… and people are just stopping to help.

No panic, no weird reactions… just “how do I help you?”

That’s the part you don’t see.

Not just how a place looks…

But how it feels when something actually goes wrong.

Took about 3 days before it really started going down.

It’s been a few days now… and I’m almost back to normal.

Appreciate all the messages and advice.

And honestly… this is exactly why we’re starting this next chapter.

We’re traveling the world to answer one question:

Could I actually settle down & live there

Healthcare. Safety. Cost of living. Community.

Showing the highs… and the lows.

What matters most to you when it comes to choosing where to live?

What else would you like to see that normally doesn’t make it on social media?

It’s come a long way since 1616 - they can call us OWNERS now momma!

I’m so PROUD of our family and the history that lead us here… words can’t do it justice. One day my kids, and their kids, and theirs will watch this video, see that beautiful smiling face, and know the path set for them stemmed from the generational love and sacrifices of Grandma Jenny (& ofc the GOAT @er342).

Standing on our dirt and celebrating this milestone together is a memory I’ll replay for all time.

@willmitchill look what you did brother🤞🏽

My family @jubril8 and @passportheavy thank you for telling our story & freezing this moment as you do with the very best on earth 🤎

I love you #BELIZE I’m never leaving 🇧🇿

Meet Jason 🇺🇸 Thirty years in Santa Monica. Lawyer. He told us he wasn’t a traveler. Wouldn’t leave home even for a weekend in San Diego without cutting it short. Wouldn’t leave his stuff.

Then a Thai friend who owned the restaurant next to his office kept inviting him. Every year. He kept saying no. Until finally, he said yes.

First day here: “I didn’t know things could be like this. Somehow I’m going to live here.”

Back home, he was watching friends stressed out, dying of heart attacks, cancer, the grind of it. “I don’t want that to be me.”

When COVID hit, his day job went remote. That was the door.

He sold the Santa Monica house. Sold nine of his fourteen guitars, including the pedal steel.

This is something we hear from a lot of the Americans we meet: the letting go of stuff you’ve held onto for years. Fifty pairs of sneakers. A car. The house. Sometimes it’s the reason people put the move off for a decade, or never make it at all.

Ironically, once they do, it turns out to be one of the most freeing things they’ve ever done.

Jason came to Bangkok with two suitcases, a laptop, and a guitar. He’s a year and a week in at the time of filming, living in Tonglor (one of the more upmarket neighborhoods in the city) for about a quarter of what California was costing him. He speaks Thai. Six years studying.

We asked him if he’d go back to the States.
“Hell no.” 🇹🇭

I’m on the road for the next twelve months, meeting the people who’ve already made the move. Different cities, countries, continents.

You don’t have to be ready to leave. You just have to be curious.

Comment ZOOM

and I’ll DM you an invite our next live call, where I walk through the options, the costs, and how people like Jason actually pull it off.

Meet Robin 🇺🇸 Ex Military, took a risk and left America 11 years ago. Never looked back. Bar and catamaran owner in Bocas del Toro 🇵🇦

Says things are tight sometimes, but he wouldn’t trade the freedom for anything. Married a Panamanian and raising their beautiful daughter out here on the islands.

Me? I’m looking for options around the world where I could actually settle down. One question, every stop, could I live here?

I’ll be meeting as many people as I can that have already made the move & looking at Healthcare. Cost of living. Safety. Visas. Community & documenting all of it here.
