POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We remember who raised us. 💛

Today, on Elizabeth "Liz" Campigli Harlan's birthday, we share the first teaser of Tamal Liwa — a song born of ceremony at the cove, with our ancestral matriarch's spirit in our hearts.

Born on this day in 1925, Liz — daughter of Bertha Campigli, grand daughter of Joe and Pauline Felix, great-granddaughter of Euphrasia and Domingo Felix — knew herself as a Tomales Bay Indian daughter. But she was also a gifted singer who broke into song anywhere and laughed, "What's wrong? You don't know how to have fun?" at a staring onlooker. If not for colonization, she could have been a singer of traditional Támal-ko songs.

Last year, with the birds, the waves, and the ancestors as collaborators, Tamal Liwa came together in a single morning — then was tended until the ancestors said it was ready. 🪶

We dedicate it to all the "Tomales Bay Indians" who once lived and fished on Tamal liwa. With too many Támal-ko generations denied their home on the cove, we answer the call of our ancestors to come home. 🌊

Tule isn’t just a plant; it’s woven into our stories, homes, and futures. Used for canoes, baskets, clothing, and much more, tule is a living connector among land, water, and people. This sacred plant relative cleans our waterways, shelters birds and animals, prevents erosion, and has long provided refuge and protection for humans in times of need.
Join us to honor the sacred tule with deep roots in Indigenous California lifeways and connect to our community:
🌿August 2 & August 23: Tule Harvest with Greg Reza
🌿August 16 & September 20: Basket Weaving with Tek Tekh
🌿September 12 & 13: Canoe Build with Redbird

Limited spots available, so RSVP today. 🔗 link in our stories.
See you there and more to come!

This past May at the Fibershed Learning Center, traditional California Native regalia maker Tiśina Parker, aka, @native___one , and traditional hide tanning artist, Jay Sliwa, hosted Buckskin Hide Tanning For BIPOC Community.

This free community workshop took place across several days at the Learning Center in Point Reyes, CA, traditional homeland of Coast Miwok and Pomo peoples.

In this workshop, community participants from the Bay Area, Oakland and four representing California tribes learned the process of buckskin brain tanning, a traditional method of preserving a deer skin hide for clothing and utilitarian use.
Traditional hide tanning is slow, physical work and it requires a lot of hard labor and a call to honor the life given.

A deer hide is first fleshed, every trace of meat and fat scraped away over a beam. The membranes that would otherwise dry stiff are broken down and the hide is worked by hand with the fats of the animal's brain matter as it is dried and stretched. Many traditions finish over smoke, which colors the hide and preserves it soft, drapey and water resistant, making a fabric fit for clothing that has ultimate durability.

The result is a supple, usable skin made without acids or industrial chemicals and is the main element in many tribal people's original clothing and contemporary traditional regalia used in ceremony.

Gratitude to Tiśina Parker and Jay Sliwa, and all community members who showed up to honor the lives of each animal given to this process and tanned some beautiful hides.

Research from 2025 world happiness report shows sharing meals is one of the most universally measurable expressions of social connection. People who share meals, are more trusting of each other, more likely to give gifts of reciprocity like donate or volunteer, and they tend to be more compassionate towards strangers.

The last four days have reminded me what a rich life I lead, surrounded by the most generous and considerate people. Nourishing our bodies and the community together!

As Robin Wall Kimmerer says, “all flourishing is mutual”

Episode 44 of Fight For Our Existence Podcast is out now.

I sat down at the Grizzly Giant in Yosemite with Irene Foskas, Tara Fauchmoore, and Aanthony Lerma of the Southern Sierra Miwok Nation.

We talked about Indigenous stewardship, cultural burning, forest health, language, and what it means to care for land your ancestors have known since time immemorial.

This conversation is about more than protecting trees or reducing fuels. It is about restoring Indigenous knowledge, honoring the relatives around us, and making sure the next generations can still walk these lands, speak their language, and carry the work forward.

Special thanks to Yosemite Conservancy for their support of this podcast episode.

Thank you to Tisina Parker of the Southern Sierra Miwok Nation for recommending my podcast for this event. I appreciate you trusting me with this space and helping make this episode happen.

How can we rethink the pace and scale we’re working on so that the changes we’re trying to implement are durable? One way to answer this is by learning from the experiences of others, and nothing beats a good story.

At our conference main stage on May 13, we’ll hear three personal stories from participants from the Right Relations and Restoring Right Relations programs about how pace, scale, and durability has shown up in their lives and work. We’re thrilled to be joined on stage by @alexiisigona, Olivia Fiori, and Tiśina Ta-till-ium Parker (@native___one)!
