Long before having a child I knew the benefits that non-competitive lifestyle pursuits (surfing, skating, BMX, snowboarding etc) can have on a person. I’ve been coaching surfing for over ten years now and seen both the micro and the macro impact it’s had on clients and friends lives.

Since having a child though who has also been gripped by these cultures I’ve really got to see it up close and from a new perspective. The resilience you see in this little edit he wanted us to make for ‘show and tell’ shows a personality trait that carries over into so many other aspects of his life.

Fall, get back up.
Fail, try again.

Surfing and skateboarding are both active conversations between mind and body; deeply personal but shared amongst community and friends.

We’re tapping into something deep; form, aesthetics, history, culture. We are when we play football too; or rugby or any other sport, but there is something about the personal aspect of non competitive pursuits that make them stand alone. Everyone on that session on their own personal journey, but existing together in a community in that moment.

Morning ramblings…but I think what I’m saying is just how lucky we are to follow these pursuits, to be part of this culture, to have this in our lives. And that falling isn’t failing- it’s an important part of the journey both physically and mentally.

Billy Bing, aged 8, my favourite skater.

The special DIY issue featured @captainpinger on the front of the mag, doing a pretty ridiculous front blunt on the vert wall at @thewasteydiy
🔥🤯🔥
We surprised Johnny at @nativeskate this morning with a little memento of his achievement.

Looking forward to more hammers at the spot when the good weather returns.
In the meantime, get it where/when you can and celebrate all the #HomiesMakingMoves ..... Including yourselves! 👊😎
