#TheNurembergWomen by @natlivingstone

It was the most famous trial of the 20th Century. The Nazi leaders were in Nuremberg and finally being held accountable for the most horrific crimes imaginable. These men sat in the docks being prosecuted by other men. But behind the scenes were women, quietly going about their business to make a difference; recording, translating interviewing, even drawing. Each of them played an important role and in this fascinating book Natalie Livingstone brings eight of them back to life, as we learn about them, their lives and their contribution to history.

I donโ€™t think I can articulately explain how moving and thought provoking this book was. I didnโ€™t actually know much about the Nuremberg Trials beforehand so Iโ€™ve learnt so much. It was astonishing to realise how little women played a part in it, to me it felt like it was a war started by men and ending with men - but also how important they were when they did.

The stories of these women brought the trial vividly to life, whether it be the harrowing detail provided by an Auschwitz survivor, or the pressure the Russian translator was under to ensure every word was correct in her work. Their contributions were vast; typing, painting, the behind the scenes actions that were crucially important but easily forgotten in the aftermath.

The book focuses on these eight women, providing some fascinating details about their war (and Nuremberg) experiences. It also has an after Nuremberg section, revealing how their lives panned out after the war, which was an excellent addition. Although the Nuremberg Trials were harrowing and often haunting, it still felt like a time of change and optimism, particularly for women.
