Rhino and Pangolin Protection at Okonjima Nature Reserve

One weighs more than two tonnes and grazes in plain sight. The other is so elusive that many people explore Africa for decades without ever seeing one.

The southern white rhinoceros and Temminck’s ground pangolin could hardly be more different. On Okonjima Nature Reserve, they share the same protectors. Both are targeted by organised illegal wildlife trade: rhinos for their horns, pangolins for their scales. Both are made mostly of keratin, the same protein found in human hair and fingernails.

Visiting Okonjima means the Leopard you see has a history…

This is Mpandu offspring to Vamos and Nuka.

Thanks to the research conducted by the @africat_foundation so much more information about the genetics and lineages of each individual leopard is now available.

When you visit Okonjima, our guides share this with you, proudly and passionately for they have been watching these individuals for decades…
