Sunday at NeMLA in Pittsburgh. Saw Alexandrea present in a roundtable, which was great to see, along with other presenters (interesting ideas about memory and trauma). Afterwards, we went to the National Aviary (largest aviary in the U.S., took a walk, and had some lunch). A good time so far!

Today was the 2024 English Department Awards Ceremony! A lot of awards given out to lots of friends. Alexandrea (@naturallymetaylor) and John (@johnn_shepherd) won the graduate creative writing award and Katherine (@kissing_supernovae) won second for the undergraduate short story contest! Jason (@jasonaphillips1) and Eve (@e_pots) won awards as well and a lot of other people I’m forgetting. My essay on Black fiction and gendered sociolinguistics won the graduate critical essay contest, along with two other great scholars, including @chemutai__chemu. Oh and @tiaaaaah31 and @larastifler won the GTA awards and rightly so as they’re totally fabulous! My student, Emily, won first place in undergraduate poetry and asked for a picture with me! She’s such a great student and I was thrilled to hear she was accepted into a graduate program in Philly. A great night- wonderful to see so many great people get deserving awards!. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #universityofrhodeisland #rhodeisland
