Shaman rock carvings from thousands of years ago?!

You’ll find Namibia’s first Unesco site at Twyfelfontein.
It means “doubtful spring” in Afrikaans. According to the urban legend, David Levin founded a farm here, because there was a smaller spring among the giant sandstone slabs of Damaraland. Unfortunately he struggled to extract enough water to maintain the farm, so his friends started to call him
David Twyfelfontein aka “David who doubts the spring”.

For thousands of years this area was inhabited by Bushmen hunter-gatherers. Twyfelfontein itself never had a proper settlement, but it was used in the dryer months, being one of the few water sources around.

The place has more than 5000 individual rock art spanning millennia: mostly carvings, but a few paintings as well. Sandstone rocks at Twyfelfontein are covered by the so-called “desert varnish”, a hard patina, that appears brown or dark grey. Engravings were made by chiseling through this patina, exposing the lighter rock underneath.

Most petroglyphs depict animals or animal pugmarks, typical for the region: lions, giraffes, kudus, antelopes, elephants. But these are not necessarily animals, as you would think: many appear with human hand or foot, which suggests, that they depict the trance, when the shamans transformed into spiritual animals.

The archeological site can be visited with a guide only, but it is well worth it, because some of the rock art you might not even find on your own!

And did you know, that it might be the oldest desert on the globe? It is more than 55 million years old!

Also, only 20% of all desert environments are covered by sand (actually Antartica is considered a polar desert because of the poor precipitation). But the Namib is a desert how it is in our common minds: sand dunes, yellow and orange colors, hardly any vegetation or fauna.

Remote, harsh, arid, endless, silent, and beautiful.
And perfect to play around with pictures as well! 😉
