Our live&learn participant Rox is currently in the middle of a 14-week internship at a conservation organisation in Cape Town 🌿

In the video, Rox tells us what the organisation does and how it feels like to work in a very special conservation area. Since 2001, it has been bringing together environmental education, nature conservation and sustainable development, right in the middle of the city.

Depending on your background and the time of year, you could get involved in things like:

🌱 removing invasive alien plants and helping out in the nursery
🦎 species counts, mapping and data management
🏕️ environmental education camps with school kids
📸 photos, videos and social media

Perfect if you’re studying biology, ecology, environmental science, geography, environmental education or marketing & communications.

More info and the link to the organisation are in our bio 💚

🌊🦀 Little feet, big impact! 💙🌱

On 8 February 2026, our Steenberg Adventure Squad explorers aged 5–11 headed out for our False Bay Beach Walk & Clean-Up 🐚🌊

Our lesson focused on Source to Sea — helping our young adventurers understand how everything is connected, from what happens in our homes and streets in Steenberg to our rivers, wetlands, estuaries and, ultimately, the ocean 💧🌍.

We explored how littering, illegal dumping and pollution in our community and catchment can travel through stormwater drains and waterways, eventually reaching our estuary and the sea, where they can harm marine life and damage fragile ecosystems. They also learnt how wetlands act like sponges that filter out our waste through an educational demonstration.

Through exploring the coastline, observing our surroundings and taking part in a beach clean-up. 🌊 Our young environmental stewards and volunteers came together for a beach clean-up, collecting approximately 9 bags of litter and helping protect our coastline and marine environment. The children learnt that protecting the ocean doesn't start at the beach — it starts right here in our own community 🌿💧.

A huge thank you to @wade_ini_water_ , our facilitator, for guiding the children through this fun and meaningful learning experience 🙌🏽.

We’re also incredibly grateful to @natureconnectsa and @tablemountainfund for supporting our Roots of Resilience project and helping us create hands-on environmental learning opportunities for young people in our community 💚.

From our streets to our catchment, from our estuary to the ocean — every action matters. Let's protect it together! 🌊💙

This is one of the most sustainable schools in Gauteng…

At De La Salle @dlshcc_juniorschool , sustainability is part of the curriculum with learners building insect hotels, growing their own food and finding creative ways to reuse waste.

We loved seeing how the school’s teachers bring this kind of active learning into everyday school life, giving learners the chance to ask questions, put what they learn into action and become future changemakers 🌻🌍

Follow along to see more schools making a difference across South Africa! ➡️

Growing Skills, Connecting with Nature!

Our NextGen participants had an inspiring day of plant propagation training combined with a meaningful Nature Connect experience at Zandvlei Nature Reserve.

Through hands-on propagation activities, participants learned how new plants can be nurtured from cuttings and developed practical skills that contribute to greener, more sustainable communities.

This project is proudly funded and supported by the Table Mountain Fund as part of their CARE Programme.

School holidays spent learning in nature 🌿🐸

On Friday, 25 September, our BWC Troopers, in collaboration with the @drphilafel foundation, visited Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei for an environmental education experience facilitated by @natureconnectsa

Nature Connect educators Nhlanhla and Mikayla introduced the Troopers to the incredible ecosystem of the vlei and helped them understand how living and non-living elements are all connected.

Through hands-on activities, the Troopers built their own cycle of life using picture cards, learnt how nutrients return to the soil and support new plant growth, and worked together to identify different living and non-living parts of the wetland 🌱

The learning continued outdoors, where they discovered the special under-road tunnel that helps leopard toads cross safely, explored Rondevlei with wildlife identification sheets and climbed the viewing platform for a beautiful view across the wetland 🐸🦅

They ended the day creatively, making artworks inspired by the vlei using crayons, grass, leaves, twigs and soil 🎨

A huge thank you to Nature Connect, Nhlanhla and Mikayla for giving our Troopers such an engaging experience and helping them understand that they can be the future carers and protectors of our natural spaces 💚

Animal specimens featured in the video were used for educational purposes and had died from natural causes.

Our Troopers take part in an outing every month. If you’re part of an organisation with a programme, workshop or experience our Troopers could benefit from, we’d love to connect and collaborate. Please get in touch by emailing zenith@drphilafel.foundation

Our changemaker Fullmoon Imbizo was a hit! Bringing together all our crowdfunder supporters to experience a little of what we do at Vrygrond Peace Garden Project. From sewing your own bag from upcycled fabrics, to leaving a wish on seeded paper to grow in our garden + meals by our team and locals all made from harvests or products from our space! A huge thank you to @admirals.residence for sharing their lovely space and being the middle point for Vrygrond and Muizenberg! #vrygrondpeacegarden #amavaoluntu #changemakersinaction

🐸 Help Save the Endangered Western Leopard Toad! 🇿🇦

Our spotted neighbours are in danger, but as Cape Town locals, we can save them!

Here is how you can help protect these iconic garden protectors:
• Join a Nightly Toad Patrol: Grab a torch, wear high-vis, and join local volunteer groups (like Toad NUTs) from July to September to help toads safely cross busy suburban roads 🔦

• Drive Cautiously: Slow down on rainy winter nights in hotspots like Noordhoek, Tokai, Kirstenhof, and Constantia. They look like small white stones on the asphalt! 🚗

• Make Pools Safe: Swimming pools are death traps. Hang a strip of shade cloth or place a brick on your top step so toads can climb out safely 🏊‍♂️

• Create Garden Passages: Toads get trapped by high boundary walls. Ensure there are small, ground-level gaps in your fencing so they can navigate their ancient migration routes 🏡

• Ditch Toxic Pesticides: Toads absorb chemicals through their skin. Go organic to keep them safe and preserve their favorite bug snacks 🐛

• Log Sightings on iNaturalist: Snap a photo of their unique back patterns and upload it to help scientists track and protect local populations 📱

Let’s keep Cape Town hopping!
Share this to spread the word. 💚

💧 Building water-wise schools starts with water-wise capacity building.

26 teachers from 15 schools joined our Water & Sanitation Teacher Workshop in Limpopo with partners @watercan_za and @envirovito .

Teachers tested local water samples, planned classroom projects, explored water quality and learned practical ways to turn learning into action. 🌱

Together, we’re helping schools raise a generation of responsible water stewards. 💧
