8/31/26 What's Spinning Today

Naughty Professor - Voices

Spinning some New Orleans Post Jazz tonight with Naughty Professor's latest release.

Naughty Professor is a horn-heavy jazz-funk sextet with a sound as energetic and unique as New Orleans. The young band has earned acclaim from critics and their musical peers, and garnered an enthusiastic following across the globe as they tour on their own or with mega-groups like Galactic.

In 2011, a group of Loyola University music students began playing together in what would evolve into Naughty Professor (named because “we were all in school at the time.”) Influenced by contemporary bands like Snarky Puppy and Lettuce, Naughty Professor weaves New Orleans funk, R & B, and brass band components into an improvisational, jazz-based sound that is both cutting edge and highly danceable.

First spin of this beautiful pressing gifted me by @t_wick_ of @mindfuzz_music and @heady_wax_fiends 💥💥💥 Providing the perfect soulful vibe for this finally-cool August morning. A little coffee, a little boogie and a lot of smiles.

A quick word about Tyler and HWF: Tyler’s one of the nicest, most generous people around, and I’m grateful we’ve gotten to know each other through Heady Wax Fiends. (All you King Gizz fans need to stop reading now and follow @mindfuzz_music stat.)

Tyler handed this to me at a HWF meet-up a few weeks ago. The Denver contingent of the group meets up regularly - every quarter or so - to spin vinyl, swap records and hang out. I love this community so much. It’s a group I always feel like I can be myself, goofball and all. We’re all massive music nerds, so you immediately feel at home. And this celebration of analog in both music and community (hanging out IRL) feels sacred at a time when we’re living with AI and a fragmented society ruling our lives. Meeting with other people in celebration of art, passion and community care feels like an act of rebellion these days. And I’ll say it over and over again - I’m so grateful for it.

Anyway, thanks Tyler! Thanks Kris! Thanks HWF fam! Love you all.

Wishing John Culbreth a happy birthday.

I made these images of John in 2024 when I gathered over 40 trumpet players from the Crescent City scene for my "Something For Satchmo" musician gathering.

As a reminder, all the images from my musician gatherings are available for purchase with 50% of the profits going to The Roots of Music program. So, for all you New Orleans music fans, here's your opportunity to own a piece of history and help out the children of the Big Easy.

Happy birthday to my man, the extra funky & silky smooth, Noah Young!

In 2019, I gathered over 30 bass players related to the Crescent City for my “Bass In Yo Face” musician gathering. This image comes from that day.

As a reminder, all the images from my gatherings are available for purchase with 50% of the profits going to The Roots of Music program.

Thank you @jazzfest 🙌🏻

Always feels a bit like coming home, but getting to interview @croweboysband live on the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage for the @jazzandheritage archive, and celebrating my in-laws Jim & Jessica’s 40th anniversary at @davidbyrneofficial’s set made this year extra special (Naive Melody was their first dance song, and Sam played drums to it at our wedding, too).

And of course, it’s always a joy to watch @thisisyourbrainondrums take the stage with @naughty_professor and @croweboysband (when Jazz Fest reached out to ask me to interview them, they had no idea my husband plays drums with them, pure coincidence—love this small, musical town) 🌼🎶
