🌱🌸 THE SEEDS SHE PLANTED 🌸🌱

As I close this chapter of Indigenous New York Fashion Week, my heart is full of gratitude, pride, and emotion. ❤️

Bringing Bineshii Creations to New York at only 23 years old, as the youngest designer here, is an honour I will carry with me forever. To stand among so many incredible Indigenous designers, artists, models, and storytellers reminded me that I am walking a path created by those before me.

My all women’s collection, “The Seeds She Planted,” was created in honour of my Kokom, Kathy Boulanger, my teacher, guide, biggest supporter, and one of the women who helped shape who I am today.

She taught me love, gratitude, strength, patience, and the importance of remembering where I come from.

As an Indigenous woman from Roseau River First Nation, this collection is my way of honouring our Kokoms, mothers, aunties, sisters, daughters, and all the Indigenous women whose strength carried us forward.

I hope an Indigenous young girl sees Bineshii Creations and thinks, “I can do it too.” ❤️

🌱 She planted the seeds.
We are the flowers.
And we will continue to grow. 🌸🪶

🎵 A piece of home came with me to New York.
The runway carried music from my late dad, David Dorian Boulanger, and my family member Boogey the Beat (Lesley Boulanger). Hearing my family’s music fill the runway while my collection came to life meant more than words can express.

My Kokom’s teachings were in the collection, and my family’s music was in the air. Our stories, our family, and our culture were with me on that runway. ❤️

There’s a lot to be saddened by or upset about these days… and I’ve certainly felt the weight of it (a world quite literally in fire).

It’s especially important to take moments to acknowledge that mounting grief and struggle in tandem with the dreams & needs we may have for a better future at odds what is being offered to us now.

It’s also important to stop and count all the reasons you still have hope, the small joys, new mayor vibes, sunny days, holding hands, long bikes, poetry readings, assorted beverages, long phone calls, some occasional hooliganism and all the incredible people that surround us.

So here’s a handful of all the things moments im grateful for and more in the past months.

Some things that’s didn’t suck…

Aka a portal into Spring, my friends holding hands and sun warming the night back into day. Freckles blossoming and petals exploding like confetti for our personal New Years parade. The horse of course.

And yes the world is on fire and my hearts been beating with a limp, but I picked a baby bird up and nursed it back to health today.

I’ve been having vivid dreams. Not all are mildly apocalyptic.

“A friend of mine once had a dream about a strange and terrible device: a staircase you could descend deep underground, in which you heard recordings of all the things anyone had ever said about you, both good and bad. The catch was, you had to pass through all the worst things people had said first before you could get to the best things said about you, at the very bottom.

The dream-metaphor is clear enough: if you want to enjoy the rewards of being loved/feeling love, you also have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known.”
