In early September 1945, as Rear Admiral Cecil Harcourt prepared to reoccupy the colony, Japanese and local civil authorities were brought out to the fleet flagship, HMS Indomitable, to thrash out the initial surrender arrangements and logistics.
On board the carrier, negotiations took place regarding the peaceful cessation of hostilities, the disarming of Japanese troops, and the stabilization of the colony prior to the formal surrender ceremony.

Vegetables for minesweepers. 1940. Once a month the farmers of Essex bring all their surplus vegetables to a naval port where they are handed out to minesweeping trawlers. The collection and storage of the vegetables is arranged by the Womens Volunteer Service, and the crews of the minesweepers simply come down to the WVS depot at the quayside and asked for whatever they want, carrots, potatoes, cabbages and even flowers. On Thursday mornings the crew of minesweeping trawlers at this port come down to the "comforts" depot at the quay, bringing with them any sacks or boxes they can lay their hands on as one crew member receives a marrow.

A different kind of crew member on HMS Belfast.
HMS Belfast carried enough provisions to feed a crew of many hundreds for months at a time. Sacks of potatoes, flour, and grain stored in the lower holds were constant targets for rats and mice.
The ship's WWII cat, Frankenstein, wasn't just a pet, he was an essential working crew member whose chief role was hunting rodents in those exact provision rooms and mess decks to protect the food supply and prevent disease.

Back in February this year I spent some time in the Chatham Historic Dockyard and explored HMS Cavalier, a WW2 Royal Navy Destroyer.
Launched on the 7th April 1944 after being laid down by J. Samuel White and Company at East Cowes a year earlier, HMS Cavalier is a retired Royal Navy C-class destroyer that officially entered service on thr 22nd November 1944. Following active deployments in World War II and multiple tours in the Far East, the vessel was decommissioned in 1972. Today, HMS Cavalier is permanently preserved as a museum ship located at the Chatham Historic Dockyard.
She has the battle honour of Arctic 1945, in February 1945, HMS Cavalier, alongside the destroyers Myngs and Scorpion, was deployed to reinforce an Allied convoy traveling from the Kola Inlet in Russia. The convoy had already endured severe enemy aircraft and U-boat attacks before being violently scattered by a storm. The escort vessels successfully regrouped the fleet and safely escorted them back to Britain, losing only three out of the 34 original ships.
HMS Cavalier underwent significant refits and modernisations during her post-war career.

A "pay parade" on a ship like HMS Rodney during World War II was a structured, formal, and highly controlled event designed to distribute cash wages securely to a large crew. Because HMS Rodney was a capital ship, this process was a significant logistical operation involving the ship’s accountant officers, and the ship’s command perssonel.

On the 6th June the heavy cruiser Frobisher was part of Gunfire Bombardment Support Force D which initially targeted German positions at Sword Beach during the D-Day landings. The ship is known to have bombarded the coastal artillery position at Riva-Bella in Ouistreham and to have knocked out the fire-control observation post in the town proper with a direct hit.

The heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper was built to project German naval power far beyond the Baltic.

Commissioned shortly before the Second World War, she became the lead ship of her class and one of the Kriegsmarine’s most recognizable heavy cruisers. Her career reflected both the ambition and the limitations of Germany’s surface fleet: powerful on paper, dangerous in isolated engagements, but increasingly constrained by fuel shortages, Allied air power, and the growing dominance of the Royal Navy.

Admiral Hipper took part in operations off Norway, Atlantic raiding missions, and the brutal Arctic convoy war. Her most famous action came during the Battle of the Barents Sea on 31 December 1942, where German surface forces attempted to strike convoy JW 51B. The battle ended in frustration for the Kriegsmarine and had major consequences for Germany’s surface fleet strategy.

By 1945, the once-formidable cruiser was no longer an active raider, but a damaged remnant of a collapsing navy. Found in Kiel after the fall of Germany, Admiral Hipper stood as a symbol of a fleet that had promised far more than it could ultimately deliver.

For those who want to dive deeper into the world of wartime cruisers, Naval Legends: Cruisers is now available on kickstarter, a beautifully illustrated naval history book featuring detailed warship reconstructions, artwork, and research-driven profiles of legendary cruisers (link in bio).

At time of this photo in 1943, likely no British submarine had been hunted more relentlessly than HMS Taku. Which was commandered by Lt. A. J. W. Pitt, RN. Earlier in the war, after torpedoing a large German supply ship off the Norwegian coast, she was forced to lie for 4 hours on the seabed while the enemy rained down "a perfect avalanche of depth charges."
Her most recent escape was in the Aegean Sea, where except for half an hour on the surface when the captain could not risk the noise of the blowers to clear air in the submarine, she had to remain submerged for 36 hours. This escape followed the sinking of a medium supply ship.
After the hunt had been eluded, the Taku went on with her patrol. Before returning to base, she sank by gunfire a boat flying a 5wa5tlka flag and loaded with German soldiers, and also successfully bombarded an enemy-occupied harbour.
