Welcome to Fulidhoo’s house reef, Vaavu Atoll.
This is a magnificent sea anemone, Heteractis magnifica, with its resident Maldivian clownfish playing hide-and-seek. The blue backdrop is alive with fusiliers - the reef’s signal that big stuff is nearby.
Vaavu’s reefs are this healthy just minutes from the island. No boat ride, no crowd. Just you, the current, and entire neighborhoods of life like this.

Stingray Beach on Fulidhoo Island, Maldives is one of the most enchanting and accessible wildlife spots in the entire Maldives archipelago.
Nestled on the small, laid-back local island of Fulidhoo in Vaavu Atoll, this stretch of shoreline—often called Stingray Beach, Shark & Stingray Beach, or marked as the “Stingray Observation Point”—has become a highlight for travelers seeking authentic, budget-friendly Maldivian experiences away from the luxury resorts.
What makes Stingray Beach so special is its daily parade of graceful stingrays (locally known as Naru Nagoo Madi) that glide right into the shallow, crystal-clear lagoon waters. These gentle creatures are drawn to the area, especially around the jetty and southern beach, often in impressive numbers—sometimes up to 20 at once. They arrive reliably throughout the day (and even into the evening), frequently tempted by scraps from local fishermen, turning the spot into a natural, living aquarium.
Visitors can often stand in ankle-deep turquoise water and watch the stingrays sweep past effortlessly, their wide wings undulating like underwater birds. On a good day, you might also spot tawny nurse sharks (harmless and relaxed) cruising alongside, or even a sea turtle joining the gathering. Many describe the experience as magical—wading in calm waters while these marine animals circle curiously nearby, creating unforgettable photo opportunities and moments of pure wonder.
