Road trip, days 2–4: Flagstaff → Horseshoe Bend → Utah

Left Flagstaff the same way we arrived: no music, no podcasts, just the road and the kind of scenery that makes you remember what an absolutely insane planet we get to live on.

Back to Horseshoe Bend, where the boats below looked ant-sized and I immediately decided Lake Powell needs to be part of the next trip. Then north through Arizona, clocks changing seemingly every 45 minutes, six people in three different states trying to figure out whether we were getting there at 1 or 2 and why none of our phones could agree.

And then: Utah. That first hit of cold mountain air after months of Texas heat. Our favorite people finally in one place. Wine open, charcuterie out, pesto that traveled all the way from Dallas, and the discovery that @jeschiles and @stevenkiener now somehow have the exact same ponytail. 😂

We thought we’d immediately start hiking. Instead: slow mornings reading by the fire, making breakfast together, @johnee_fenz conducting full culinary reconnaissance so we knew exactly where to find the best lunch, cider, pies and fritters, and entire afternoons built around what should we eat next. One night, he marinated the meat, I made Asian noodles, we ate under the stars and ended around the fire with wine.

That’s one of my favorite parts of traveling with people you love: getting to make a tiny temporary life somewhere else. Groceries in the fridge. Coffee in the morning. Someone cooking, someone pouring wine, someone building the fire, someone chasing a toddler. And for a few days, a place you’ve never lived starts to feel strangely like home.

The road to Zion, and the little life we made when we got there. 🤍

Comment ‘MARFA’ and I’ll send you my latest article, What the Desert Gave Back.

There are trips that fill your camera roll, and then there are the ones that quietly rearrange how you see your own life. This was the latter.

I didn’t go looking for anything specific, but I left with a shift, something about space, about stepping outside of the version of your life you’ve been gripping so tightly, about remembering there are other ways to be, even when nothing has been resolved.

I wrote about that, about expansion, about returning to yourself, about what it means to experience something without needing it to lead anywhere.

I’ve been thinking a lot about where this kind of writing actually belongs. That’s what led me to @substack. It’s still all things À la Antonia, just in a space that allows for more depth, more nuance, more room to actually explore something fully. A place where people come to read, to think, to engage, not just consume.

And this piece felt like the right place to begin there.

If this writing resonates, you can subscribe for free, or for the price of a coffee each month, support it more directly. It truly makes a difference, especially as we continue navigating a season that’s asking a lot of us while we’re still holding hope for the family we’re working to build.

And more than anything, I hope this inspires you to go somewhere that opens you up, surprises you, shifts you in ways you didn’t expect. The right place, at the right time, can give something back you didn’t even realize you were missing.

-Antonia
