This photo was taken on a music video @lance_drake and I shot many years ago when we were somewhere between punk kids and adult filmmakers. I really wanted to shoot on film and Lance trusted and supported me in it. I think I paid for processing myself. We shot all night and finished at dawn. @nbkhuu dragged a genie and a small lightning strikes unit around the la river all night. At sunrise when we wrapped I think our loader had to go to their normal paying commercial job so the film could not be downloaded. This is something I wouldn’t allow anymore for safety’s sake. I remember going to @fotokem with the exposed film rolls by myself at 9am and asking if they had a dark room because for some reason I didn’t have a changing tent anymore. They didn’t have a room for me but they put me in a dark closet and I put tape on the door that said “do not enter”. I distinctly remember downloading the film in pitch black in this closet at fotokem while employees were arriving for work. I was the kind of tired we all know on film sets, where you feel like you’ve been up all night partying. It’s an apocalypse now level of insanity. Madness. I remember the perfect silence and perfect darkness in that closet while I downloaded the film. When the film came back most of it looked amazing. Some of it… was irreversibly underexposed beyond recovery. I had done that thing that so many of us young excited DPs attempt to do which is try to replicate what our hero Harris Savides, ASC famously did in “Birth” when he underexposed the film by 2 stops and also pulled 2 stops. Essentially underexposing the negative by 4 stops. The stuff that did come out was the coolest most evocative stuff I had ever shot. The stuff where we missed, it was black on the negative. Lance was incredibly generous and kind in the face of this massive mistake. If memory serves me correctly I paid for an Alexa myself and we did a small reshoot to fill in the gaps. I will always remember my director’s patience and understanding during that very stressful shameful moment for me. It was a moment where my passion and ambition surpassed my skill. But that’s where it happens. Love you Lancey.
