Jagged peaks, waterfalls, and over 300 glaciers adorn the North Cascades National Park Service Complex.

I went for the larches surrounding the Liberty Bell Group spires and maybe a mountain goat, but what unexpectedly caught my eye was the intricate patterning of a dead fallen tree. Littered with needles from the many larches, its swirling spiral grain lines pulled me in, and then the rounded “eyes,” the burls, held me there.

The other images of the larches are all about the warm glow of sunlight, like vibrant gold foil along the mountain cliffs or scattered just off the trail. Views of Blue Lake show a mirror of larch-covered slopes, or a diagonal sweep of another dead tree leading your eye through to the lake and peaks.

I’ve written multiple pages about our time in North Cascades National Park and Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Yet, I find myself hesitating to share those two days publicly. Some stories are meant to be tucked away, held close by only those who experienced them. That’s something I’ll carry in my heart for years to come.

Washington’s most famous fall hike. 🍁✨

I actually used to think this trail was kind of overrated… but hiking it in fall COMPLETELY changed my mind. 👀

📍 Maple Pass Loop - North Cascades, Washington

After hiking this trail SIX times in the past four years, last fall we FINALLY got the conditions I’ve been dreaming of: beautiful fall colors, golden larches, and a soft pink sunset. 🌲🍂

We’ve snowshoed Maple Pass in winter, and hiked this trail during peak summer wildflower season. Although this hike is beautiful year round, fall is when it TRULY shines. I love the pops of reds, yellows, and oranges in the landscape. 🧡

Diablo Lake in North Cascades National Park is even more unreal in person! A few tips if you’re planning a visit:

✨ Bring your own kayak or paddle board, the views from the middle of that turquoise water are worth it!

☀️ Go early for a better chance at calmer water and fewer people.

🧥 Don’t let the sunshine fool you. This water is COLD!

🚗 Check Highway 20 road closures before you go since access is seasonal.

⬜👀

☁️ after ascending thousands of miles, dodging bears, and dreaming of an epic view, we saw nothing but a blank, eerie horizon. ☁️ (For reference, the last pic is what it's supposed to look like lol)

This is what we wrote in the fire tower journal: "⬜<-- views from the top... Was it worth it?? JK, the story will be worth it since I plan on fighting a bear on the way down!"
