POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Before I Go” Quilt & Clay Exhibit by Kimberley Pierce Cartwright on exhibit through October 3 at Winston-Salem State’s Diggs Gallery .

Rather than centering on what remains unfinished, this body of work shifts the lens toward what is intentionally preserved, what endures beyond the artist’s hand.

“Before I Go” is both offering and invocation. It asks: What do we choose to leave behind? What carries forward? In this space, Cartwright’s work becomes a vessel for reflection, inviting each viewer to consider their own imprint—what is held, what is released, and what remains.
“Before I go, I want the world to know…”

Cartwright is an alumna of Shaw University.

“At Diggs Gallery, we believe art is one of the most powerful ways to preserve history and inspire dialogue across generations. Quilting has long been a vessel for storytelling, carrying the memories, traditions, and resilience of families and communities. Throughout the African American experience, quilts have served not only as objects of beauty but also as records of heritage, identity, and lived experience. Kimberley Pierce Cartwright’s work honors this rich legacy while encouraging us to reflect on the stories we preserve, the histories we inherit, and the imprint we leave for those who follow.” - V. Dianne Pledger, Director, Diggs Gallery

We eagerly await a vist from you, your family, friends and RAMILY community to view “Before I Go” on exhibit August 17-October 3. Don’t miss this opportunity and tell a friend or two!

RELEASE THE VIDEOS. These details don’t add up - why was someone showing signs of a medical emergency handcuffed and put in the back of cop car unassisted and unmonitored? Why wasn’t EMS called as soon as he presented signs of a medical need, BEFORE he was arrested? WHY ARE WE STILL ALLOWING BLACK MEN TO DIE AT THE HANDS OF POLICE?

Mythic Futures, a series of four Afrofuturist public artworks, one in each quadrant of Washington, DC by @ncbafl co-founder artist Antoine Williams (@antoinesart) in collaboration with The Nicholson Project. This multimedia installation acts as contemporary Black folklore in a moment of social, racial, and economic upheaval. These four murals serve as a site for radical Black imagining in public space as a liberated act, one that is meant to subvert an untenable status quo. Each mural features a Mythic Being, a mythological deity the that reflects contemporary Black life.
This project is funded by The National Academy of Design’s Abbey Mural Prize and the DC Commission on the Arts
ON VIEW JUNE 3 - DECEMBER 10, 2023

#repost • @endiabeal “Spaces of Comfort” is a series of photographs that foster empathy across racial, cultural, and social divides at Davidson College in Davidson, NC. As one of the last private liberal arts institutions in the nation to integrate African Americans in 1964 and women in 1972, the university strives to reconcile with the past.

From 2021-2023, I was the Practitioner-In-Residence at Davidson. I met with more than 100 students, on campus and via Zoom, for group conversations and one-on-one listening sessions. Drawing from my experiences as a Black woman who attended predominantly white universities, I recalled feeling isolated on campus. There were spaces that I was not welcome, or I was afraid to go. Therefore, I asked the students the following questions about their occupation of space:

What is your space of comfort on campus? Where do you feel seen and heard? Where can you be yourself? Where do you choose not to go on campus?

I connected with students and gained insight into the social dynamics of campus life. The conversations revealed that most students gravitated to individuals who were similar, and in turn, they spent the majority of their time in the same spaces with the same students.

Thus, for the series, I paired students with someone they did not know. Then I asked them to switch places and be photographed in each other’s space of comfort. I wanted the students to reimagine campus life through someone else’s eyes.

Follow @davidsoncollegeartgalleries to learn more! The exhibition is on view from August 28th - October 1, 2023

Support The Port, a community organization committed to empowerment and change, is thrilled to announce an inspiring week-long event, “Reparations and Representation Week,” dedicated to celebrating black excellence, heritage, and culture. This special event will take place from Monday, October 16th to Sunday, October 22nd, aiming to educate, entertain, enhance, and preserve the rich legacy of the black community in Wilmington, NC.
Wilmington holds a unique historical significance, being the site of the only successful coup on US soil. Against this backdrop, Reparations and Representation Week will provide a platform for fostering connections, reflection, learning, collaboration, and organization centered around race relations and historical events that have marginalized communities. The event aims to promote healing, reconciliation, and empowerment by engaging in meaningful conversations, interactive panels, networking events, film screenings, communal meals, and highlighting local businesses. This year we will have special guest like but not limited to; descendants of 1898 like Alexander Manly’s descendants (Manly was the owner of The Daily Record the first black daily newspaper in the state that was burned down during the 1898 Coup) , world thought leader on socio economics 19Keys and more.

Throughout the entire month of October, a social media campaign called “Social Media Solidarity” will encourage participants to wear black and/or green and share photos online to stand in solidarity for reparations.
