Roy Cooper has a record of advancing gun violence prevention and public safety in North Carolina.

As governor, he established the state’s Office of Violence Prevention, launched NC S.A.F.E.—a safe-storage initiative that has now distributed more than 175,000 free gun locks—and vetoed legislation that eliminated the state’s handgun purchase-permit and background-check process.

Public safety is on the ballot. Research the candidates and make your plan to vote:

🗳️Early voting: October 15–October 31

After my recent post, a lot of you have asked about organizations you can contribute to in honor of Gabrielle.

I think it would be a beautiful idea, to channel her love and to honor her by supporting families affected by gun violence. I am invite anyone who feels led to join me in making a donation to a local North Carolina organization.
There are three incredible local nonprofits doing vital work across our state, depending on where you would like your gift to go. If you feel led to give, you can use any of the direct links below. (Most have an "In Honor Of" checkbox where you can add Gab's name)

🤍 To Support Grieving Families & Survivors directly:
The North Carolina Victim Assistance Network @nc_victim_assistance_network (NCVAN) provides trauma-informed grief support, counseling, and legal advocacy for families who have lost loved ones to violent crime. They also maintain a beautiful Memorial Garden in Raleigh.
👉 Donate here: https://nc-van.org/get-involved/ways-to-give/

🏡 For Grassroots Community Action & Peace-Building:
The Religious Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham (RCND) works at the local level right in the Triangle, hosting vigils, walking alongside homicide survivors through long-term grief, and running restorative justice programs to stop cycles of violence.
👉 Donate here: https://nonviolentdurham.org/donate/

📣 For Statewide Prevention & Public Safety Education:
The North Carolinians Against Gun Violence @ncgvaction (NCGV) Education Fund focuses on systemic change. They run public safety campaigns, teach secure gun storage, and research root causes to prevent gun violence before it happens.
👉 Donate here: https://www.ncgv.org/donate/

No pressure at all, but I wanted to share this as a tangible way we can lift up her memory and put some light back into the world in her name. Thank you all so much.

National Gun Violence Awareness Month reminds us that safer communities are built when people raise their voices, participate in our democracy, and advocate for change.

Ten days after the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, where 49 people were killed and more than 50 injured, civil rights leader and Georgia Representative John Lewis led a sit-in on the House floor to demand action on our nation’s gun violence crisis.

The Pulse shooting targeted a space where LGBTQ+ people gathered in community and celebration, underscoring how gun violence can threaten both individual lives and the freedoms that civil rights movements have long fought to protect.

For Lewis, the connection was clear: the fight for civil rights, voting rights, and safer communities are deeply linked. When people can participate in our democracy, they have a voice in shaping the policies that affect their lives—including policies that can help prevent gun violence.

As we reflect on Lewis’s legacy, we remember that protecting our rights and strengthening our democracy are essential to building safer communities for everyone.

During Pride Month, we also join LGBTQ+ communities, survivors, and families in remembering those lost at Pulse and reaffirming our commitment to communities free from violence. 🧡

This Pride Month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and reaffirm a simple belief: everyone deserves to be safe being who they are, loving who they love, and gathering in community without fear.

Yet as more data is collected, troubling trends continue to emerge. Despite generational shifts toward greater acceptance, LGBTQ+ people experience gun violence at disproportionately high rates.

Research shows LGBTQ+ people are more than twice as likely to be victims of gun violence as their straight and cisgender peers.

Among transgender youth, 29% report being threatened or injured with a weapon on school property, compared with 7% of cisgender youth.

We also recognize the unique risks facing transgender communities, particularly Black trans women, who are disproportionately impacted by gun violence and homicide.

Pride has always been about dignity, visibility, belonging, and the freedom to live authentically. As we celebrate this month, we recommit ourselves to building safer communities where everyone can thrive.

Happy Pride Month.
