Between expanding opportunities for students and developing integral community ties, the four honorees acknowledged in the Board of Trustees reception at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) Thursday helped define the school’s legacy.

Chief Campus Officer Kevin Baxter brimmed with excitement over the reception. The third of its kind, Baxter explained that the annual honors are not mandatory, but the school’s administrators felt inclined to acknowledge the excellence of their contributors.

“When you overextend an honor, it can become less meaningful,” Baxter said. “And so, we try to find lots of different ways to show our appreciation to folks. This is, in some ways, our highest honor here at NCSSM-Morganton, and meant to be for those who make the most significant impact.”

Each year, Baxter presents a set of recommendations to the chancellor of the NCSSM in Durham, Morganton’s sister institution. The schools function as one entity with separate campuses — meaning they share the title of Best Public High School in America awarded by Niche, a leading school analysis site that provides profiles on schools across the country.

Baxter said the school had prepared an extensive invite list, requesting the presence of many community pillars.

💙🏐 TEAL OUT for Cancer 🏐💙

September is Ovarian & Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month — and teal is the color of hope. The NC School of Science & Math Volleyball Team is standing together with Casting for Hope to bring back our #TealOut tradition. We’re raising awareness and funds to support women and families fighting gynecological cancers.

✨ How you can help:
• Wear teal & cheer at the games
• Share this post to spread awareness
• Donate to Casting for Hope here: castingforhope.org/contributing

📣 Use #TealOut & tag us to help your voice be part of the movement!

Let’s fill the court, the stands, and social media with teal — because every donation, every share, every bit of awareness does make a difference. 💙

Thanks to our longtime board member Tim Barnsback as well as NCSSM Volleyball Coach Abi Norris for reviving this Burke County tradition!

We are still buzzing with joy over Friday’s Family Day, where families from across the state were invited to our campuses in Durham and Morganton to spend a day in their NCSSM student’s shoes. Families were guided through a day of classes by their student and a team of enthusiastic and knowledgeable student leaders. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so special.

As Chancellor Roberts says, NCSSM is “one school, two campuses, many programs” and Convocation 2025 exemplified this adage. Thanks to our stellar ITS department, two campuses got to experience the same moving, motivating Convocation and kick off what is already proving to be an extraordinary school year. Unicorns and Dragons, we hope you dare to dream higher this year— you’re already off to a great start!

It was a joy to see every piece of the NCSSM community mobilize to make Junior Move-In and Senior Move-In a success this year. Senior leaders, RLAs, CCs, faculty and staff members, families, and new students all worked together this weekend to get hundreds of students moved into NCSSM in Durham and Morganton for the 2025-2026 school year. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to get our students back on campus, we’re so glad they’re here. 💙
