“Dancer in Blue”, 3’x 4’, oil on canvas

I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful ballet dancer who knew just how to improvise for the camera. She was tremendous because even with all of her classical training, she was willing to move in new and alternative ways. I asked her to throw her arms and legs in directions with energy and release. This image came out of that collaboration.

As I started to sketch small studies I had the impulse to add strings to her wrists and leg as if she is being held up by a force outside of the frame.

Continuing to search for the balance between structure and dissolved edges and looseness.
