In Charlotte, North Carolina, 4-year-old Caleb Flax was killed while sleeping in his bed. A woman who lives there was shot in the leg, but is expected to be okay.

Caleb’s mom was sleeping in the bed with her son when the shooting happened.

“Turned the light on; all I saw was blood on my baby,” she said. “They shot him in his head, and it went through his brain.”

“they said we were killing our democracy. Good thing we did because we don’t have one.”

Those are the words my opponent used while discussing voting.

My opponent joked about “killing democracy.” I don’t find that funny. Madison wrote that our system rests on the capacity of people for self-government. I believe the people of North Carolina should choose their leaders, not have politicians choose their voters.

Yes, America is a republic. And a republic is a form of representative democracy.

The founders did not create a system where politicians rule without accountability. Our government gets its power from the people. That’s democracy in action, and I will never celebrate weakening it.

But voters should also know the record.

My opponent voted to override the governor’s veto of Senate Bill 20, which imposed additional restrictions on a woman’s right to choose and to privacy.

She voted to override the veto of Senate Bill 747, an elections-law package changing voting and election procedures.

She authored the amendment that required communities, like Statesville and Moorseville, that withdrew support for the I-77 toll-lane project to reimburse the state and put transportation funding at risk until repayment. Davidson and Cornelius were among the communities she acknowledged could lose significant funding.

She has also opposed developer impact fees. Impact fees are one-time charges on new development intended to help pay for the additional roads, schools, parks, water and sewer systems, and public-safety infrastructure that growth requires.

And while families are paying their monthly power bills, campaign-finance records show her campaign accepted contributions from the Duke Energy Corporation PAC.

North Carolina’s corporate income-tax rate has also fallen to 2% in 2026, continuing a years-long reduction.

These are not abstract differences. They are decisions about who pays, who gets heard, and who government works for.

I pledge to stand with you, listen to you, and fight for you.

Early voting begins October 15. Election Day is November 3.
