It’s Grad Student Appreciation week at Notre Dame, and we’re taking a look inside a campus lab with Gracie Hedgpeth a third year Ph.D. student who researches in the Rohr Lab! 🐸☘️

Read how this week’s Domer in a Lab decided she wanted to pursue a Ph.D. and what advice she has for other students ⬇️

What inspired you to pursue a PhD?
Research requires you to flex so many different muscles: science, writing, teaching, statistics, public speaking, engineering, creativity, and problem-solving with experimentation. As an undergrad, I would have majored in everything if I could; but since I couldn’t, I became a researcher, which has been pretty close! I also love that as a researcher, you’re essentially a science detective, investigating problems that have never been solved before. That makes the work incredibly exciting, especially when you produce new evidence and eventually “crack the case” on your own research question.

Any advice to those wanting to get a research PhD?
Don’t be afraid to work in different types of labs! Not only will doing so allow you to discover what research interests you most, but you will build a set diverse skills and experience that will make you more unique, desirable, and successful going into graduate school. As an undergrad, I worked in all kinds of labs, studying organisms from bugs to birds to bats! #lab #frogs #research #notredame #collegeofscience
