Climate action requires more than ambition. It requires financing, infrastructure, innovation, policy, and people with the skills to make the transition happen.

Nigeria’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) estimates that US$337 billion will be required for mitigation and adaptation actions across all sectors between 2026 and 2035. Of this, approximately US$195 billion (57.8%) is needed for mitigation, while US$141.5 billion is estimated for adaptation and US$0.5 billion for Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE).

But climate finance is not only about funding projects. It is also about building the workforce and enterprises that will deliver the transition.

From renewable energy and sustainable agriculture to waste management, circular economy businesses, climate technology and green infrastructure, the transition creates demand for new skills, new enterprises and new jobs.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has highlighted the employment and economic implications of Nigeria’s climate policies, including the importance of skills, sustainable enterprises and decent work in the transition.

So the question is not only:

“How do we finance climate action?”

It is also:

“How do we ensure that climate finance builds a workforce and economy capable of delivering the transition?”

Fix the finance. Build the systems. Create the jobs. Make the transition work for people.
