Bad Apples

I found this film at times to play out like a bit of a ghost story about the much talked about but very inconsistently ideated middle chapters between being a young adult and a respected adult.

Standing somewhere in the middle everything feels thrown together and life looks not like the grades you were given in school or the place you might end up once you are comfortable in your career but instead how you are able to perform and deliver for those on either side of you, how many pats on the back you might receive for being a good adult from peers noticing how you handle things, how many big life purchases you are making and just if you have your shit together or not. It’s kinda awful knowing no one is going to save you and wanting support makes others think you’re weak.

Things are may not be good and you are celebrated for getting on with it, keeping quiet and eating your vegetables - It feels like every part of Maria’s life is testing her to see if she is capable of handling her load and while the answer is firmly no it should never be yes as the answer should always be community and support. Really felt like I crawled inside a mental health advocate bag during this one and just wanted to say time out and have everyone talk through their feelings.

This landed way too close to home and I both liked that and felt very uncomfortable remembering stories I’ve heard from friends that are teachers or just generally getting a raw deal at work from those above them who either do not listen or do not care.

Go support this film!

If you can figure out why I used the Rene Magritte painting Son of Man for the my inspiration for this poster you’re my favourite person.

BAD APPLES hits UK and US cinemas today 🍏 🍎 🍏!

I had a blast working with @jonatanetzler and @oskarpimlott on this wild ride of a film - a ‘pitch-black’ dark comedy. It was such a fun musical journey, and it’s not every day you get to feature recorders and the tubax in the same score. My one tip, watch it in the cinema with the biggest crowd you can find, and go in as blind as possible…

The soundtrack is out today in all the usual places, thanks to the legendary @InvadaRecords.

Huge thanks to the incredible musicians who brought this to life: @team_recorder, the sounds you get out of your recorders are second to none. @chamberorchestraoflondon and @echovocalensemble, you really brought your A game. And thanks to @tomkilworth for working tirelessly on the orchestration and two long days conducting in the basement at the brilliant @master_chord_studio.

Bad Apples opens in cinemas this Friday, September 18. UK, US, Sweden and a whole bunch of other countries. Go see it.

I directed this one, which means I’ve seen it more times than any human should, but I still really like it. It’s based on @ras.lindgren ’s novel De Oönskade, with a brilliantly twisted script by @jessokane and it’s about what happens when trying to do the right thing slowly turns into something much darker. It’s a wild, fun ride that asks a few uncomfortable questions and refuses to answer them for you. That’s about as much as I want to say before you’ve seen it.

The reception so far has been more than I ever dared hope for.

Huge thanks to everyone who made this happen. The team, British and Swedish alike, was insanely dedicated and worked their asses off. Thank you Saoirse Ronan for carrying the character of Maria on your shoulders. Thank you @oskarpimlott for fighting for this all the way. Thank you @paramountpics @vicestudiosofficial @hanway_films and @curzonfilm. Thank you Rasmus for the book.

Friday. Cinema. Go. 🍏

Ever heard of sequence-space synesthesia? It’s when things like months, weekdays, or even decades appear in your mind as colors.

My twenties were orange. My thirties were red. And last week, I entered my forties- a darker color that hasn’t quite revealed itself yet.

The past ten years have been about settling down. No more moving from place to place. But they’ve also been about traveling, discovering adventure racing, breakups, losing friends, finding new ones, and becoming just a little more comfortable in my own skin.

And while I now look ahead to this darker shade, I hope it turns out to be anything but dark. I hope it brings more travel, more adventures, the joy of holding on to the good ones and the confidence to believe in myself and a future that fills that quiet place in me that has always longed to belong.

Because I am incredibly lucky. I’ve found people who genuinely like me 😅People who stay. People who drive for hours just to celebrate me 💛

Here’s to whatever color/chapter comes next 😘🌞

THRILLED to see the trailer for 🍎BAD APPLES🍎 looking as sharp and anarchic as it was fun to shoot. Such a unique off kilter tone and a very particular aesthetic to Standby Art Direct. Coming to UK Cinemas September 18th. Can’t wait!! Shout out to @jonatanetzler @oskarpimlott @neaasphall @bogaert_jeroen @sarahjblenkinsop
