Today we had the honor, and privilege of getting to see @unlincoln’s Kiewit Hall, the College of Engineering up close and personal! A huge thank you to Jace Grunden, president of the Cornhusker Figure 8 Racing team, for inviting us out and showing us the best time.

We got to see the garage, where the @nebraskaracing team is getting their hands dirty building race cars, inspiring and giving other students the opportunity to scratch that racing itch, get into a race car, and learn what it takes to be a driver and/or mechanic.

Truly mind blowing to see what all goes on in the College of Engineering. Let me tell you, if I wasn’t into race cars, i’d probably be joining these students who are designing and manufacturing small scale combat robots. The Big Red Brawl was going on while we were there and they were putting on quite the show. Insane talent. @bigred.battlebots 🤖

I don’t say this ever… but the environment made me want to head back to school. (You will never hear me say those words again.)

And of course, we ended the tour with a ride in their 1980 Pontiac Firebird figure 8 car. Man that thing screams some bald eagles 🦅

(If you’ve made it this far, let’s just say this won’t be the last time I see Jace and his team again. Stay tuned. 😉🏁)

When the walls come crumbling down, and you lose everything you have, you will always have friends and family. In a world full of misery and uncertainty, it is a great comfort to know that in the end, there is light in the darkness. #year1 #unl #sidequests #freshman #fyp

When Jace (@jacegrunden) and his fellow Cornhusker Figure 8 Racing team founders approached @nebengineering leadership about starting a team at Nebraska, they had to be honest: they would be crashing the car. A lot.

"We ran the idea through our heads for probably two years, doing a bunch of research on how feasible this was before approaching @involvedunl and the college,” says Jace. “We wouldn’t be racing at top speeds, but we did have to be honest that the car would not be pristine when it came back to the shop.”

In the high-octane world of Figure 8 racing, beating up the car comes with the territory, along with a host of unique technical challenges. To prep for racing this summer, the team of Husker engineers had to push the skills they’re learning in class to new levels.

“I've been a car guy since I was in high school, but besides Anna (@anna.hadan), none of us had ever built a race car before. We've only been approved since January, and we've been working pretty much every single night until race day.”

To accomplish this work, the team found welcome partners and perfect facilities in the college.

“Without the Kiewit Hall garage space or any of the people here at @nebengineering, this would not have happened this year at all.”

The work also took a lot of learning on the fly, bringing together every aspect of engineering.

"We had three or four of our team members go through hours of statics and dynamics problems to look at all the scenarios. Connecting those dots between your classes and real-life engineering has been a great experience.”

As they moved through racing season this summer, the team achieved their goal: successfully finishing a race. Both the accomplishment and opportunity have meant everything to Jace.

“At Nebraska, they genuinely do care about their students and want to give you the best chance to succeed with your ideas. Getting the opportunity to come try and lead something like this really makes my heart swell with pride.”
