What are your thoughts?

Can the barbershop be enough, or do Black men need spaces specifically designed for healing?

👇🏾 Let’s talk about it.

Some people see a news story.

Others see a reflection of experiences they’ve carried their entire lives.

That’s the thing about racial trauma. It’s rarely about one incident. It’s the accumulation of being viewed with suspicion, judged before being known, and carrying the weight of experiences that never fully got processed.

For many Black people, moments like these don’t just spark conversation. They stir up emotions, memories, fears, frustrations, and wounds that run much deeper than the headlines.

If you’ve felt angry, exhausted, distracted, anxious, or emotionally heavy lately, pay attention to that.

Your reaction may not be about one case.

It may be about years of carrying things you were never given permission to put down.

Healing starts when we stop pretending we’re unaffected.

You can’t heal what you refuse to name.

I think one of the biggest sources of stress for many of us isn’t what other people expect from us.

It’s what we expect from ourselves.

The timeline.
The goals.
The picture we created in our minds of where we thought we’d be by now.

And when life doesn’t go according to that plan, we can be incredibly hard on ourselves.

We focus on what we haven’t accomplished.
We compare ourselves to others.
We convince ourselves we’re behind.

But maybe the question isn’t whether you’re where you thought you’d be.

Maybe the question is whether you’re giving yourself credit for how far you’ve come.

Life has a way of changing the timeline.

There are setbacks we didn’t plan for.
Losses we didn’t expect.
Responsibilities we never saw coming.

Yet somehow, you’re still here.

Still growing.
Still learning.
Still showing up.

Hold yourself accountable.

Keep striving.

But don’t become so focused on where you thought you’d be that you fail to appreciate where you are.

Give yourself some grace.

You’ve made it through more than you realize.

What happened to you may not be your fault.

The trauma.
The betrayal.
The abandonment.
The things you experienced growing up.

None of that may have been your choice.

But healing is still your responsibility.

As men, many of us were taught how to survive, not how to heal. We learned how to push through, stay busy, and keep moving. But eventually, unaddressed pain shows up in our relationships, our emotions, our decisions, and the way we show up in the world.

Healing isn’t about blaming yourself for what happened.

It’s about taking ownership of what happens next.

Therapy.
Self-reflection.
Accountability.
Honest conversations.

That’s the work.

And while the work isn’t easy, it’s worth it.

You deserve more than survival. You deserve healing.

Too many Black men are suffering in silence.

Not because they’re weak.
Not because they don’t care.
But because they’ve spent a lifetime being told to “be strong” and handle it on their own.

The reality is that suicide is impacting Black men at alarming rates, and too many brothers are carrying pain that nobody knows about.

If you’re struggling, please hear this:

Your life matters.
Your pain is valid.
And asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Before you give up, talk to somebody.

One conversation can change everything.

This Men’s Mental Health Month, let’s do more than say “check on your strong friends.”

Let’s create spaces where Black men can be honest about what they’re carrying.

Stay, brother. We’re not done with you yet.

“I’M GOOD.”

But what if that’s not the whole story?

Too many men are carrying pain behind a smile and answering every question with the same two words: “I’m good.”

Isolated.
Mentally Exhausted.
Grieving.
Overwhelmed.
Out of Energy.
Drowning Silently.

This Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s normalize checking in, speaking up, and creating spaces where men can be honest about what they’re carrying.

Sometimes the strongest thing a man can say is:
“I’m not good.”

Check on the men who say they’re good.
