![Let’s change the algorithms to stop showing the same authors, and the same books.
Today is for Nefarious Press, a women-owned independent publisher specialising in queer horror, crime and dark fiction.
TC Parker is Nefarious Bat’s Editor-in-Chief.
The author of 13 books (... and counting...) including Saltblood, Salvation Spring, the Long Con trilogy and the Hummingbird series, she’s worked in editorial in various capacities for almost 20 years: freelance, and in-house as lead copywriter and editor for a UK comms agency.
For the last decade, when not otherwise occupied with writing and publishing things, she’s been the Managing Director of a semiotics, discourse analysis and cultural insight consultancy: a job that mostly entails her asking, “what does [x] mean, and how is it changing?” And then going off into the world to find out.
She has two kids, an audiobook habit and a PhD in media, politics and cultural studies; she likes critical theory, Terry Pratchett and the Ancient Near East, and dislikes conservatism in almost every form.
She’s especially interested in hearing from queer writers, BIPOC British writers, neurodivergent writers, and any and all combinations of the above.
Shauna Mc Eleney is the Managing Director of Nefarious Bat Press.
The author of Awake in the Night and the upcoming Where the Bluebells Lie, she hails from county Donegal in the Republic of Ireland. She holds a degree in English Lit, a degree in Business, and a masters in Film.
She likes designing book covers, listening to sad music and stressing about things that will likely never happen. She dislikes badly run small presses and people taking advantage of indie authors.
She enjoys reading strong female MCs, slow-burn dread, grief and nuanced characterisation; small towns, dark comedy and horror with heart. She’s a total sucker for a seaside setting.

![🦷THE EXODONTISTS by Drew Huff🦷
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
-
I’ve been dying to get my hands on an ARC of The Exodontists, and now that I’ve finished, the main word that comes to mind is WEIRD!!! 😳 Totally chaotic, disgustingly weird, and virtually impossible to put down!
Drew Huff does a fantastic job of making you feel deeply uncomfortable... in the absolute best way possible. 😅 The horror here is gruesome, detailed, and completely unnerving, yet the world building is wonderfully rich and immersive. Strangely enough, I found myself becoming surprisingly attached to these monsters and characters. Their dynamics were a highlight and I even found myself laughing out loud at times and feeling genuine sympathy for them. Strangely enough, at its core, this is actually a found family story (because family is everything to these exodontists), and the ending wrapped things up so nicely for a specific character that it almost felt full circle and... happy? My thoughts are a bit chaotic, but honestly, that chaos just works for a book like this.
A quick heads up before diving in: this is definitely not a read for the squeamish, and I highly advise proceeding with caution. Beyond the visceral horror, the story deals with heavy real-life triggers, including on and off page depiction of [sxual assault / rpe and m*rder], which were personally harder to push through than the gore.
I did notice a few writing inconsistencies along the way that threw me off at times and it was a bit difficult to follow which characters were talking or thinking, which originally had me leaning toward a 3-star rating. However, that ending landed so well that it easily bumped it up to a solid 4 stars. If you can stomach the unsettling ride, it’s well worth the trip!
Thank you to Nefarious Bat Press, Drew Huff and NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
THE EXODONTISTS releases on Oct 13th! 🦷
