🇪🇹 Negus vs. Emperor

There was an important distinction:

* Negus = King
* Negusa Nagast (ንጉሠ ነገሥት) = “King of Kings”, the imperial title of Ethiopia

The Negusa Nagast stood above other negus and was essentially the Emperor of Ethiopia.

One of the most famous emperors associated with the title was Haile Selassie, whose full imperial title included “King of Kings of Ethiopia.”

✝️ Biblical and Ethiopian significance

The concept of a King of Kings had deep religious significance in Ethiopia. Ethiopian monarchs traditionally connected their legitimacy to the biblical Solomonic tradition, particularly the Ethiopian account of the relationship between King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.

This tradition became especially important to the Ethiopian monarchy and was incorporated into the Kebra Nagast, a medieval Ethiopian text.

🌍 Why “Negus” became significant beyond Ethiopia

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the word Negus became known internationally through Ethiopia’s resistance to European colonialism. Ethiopia’s victory over Italy at the Battle of Adwa in 1896 became a major symbol of African sovereignty and resistance to European imperialism.

Yesterday, a few ladies from Black & Bound participated in our book crawl.

More on that later.

But yesterday was so much more than books and coffee.

And here’s proof.

Our final stop on the crawl was 77 & Belle, @77andbelle._ a beautiful Black-owned coffee shop founded by Diamond Alexander and named in honor of her grandmother, Hattie Belle. What a beautiful way to honor someone who I’m sure was a major influence and inspiration for Diamond!

As we were wrapping up, we chatted with @neguskemet , who was there creating content for the café. After learning a little about Black & Bound, he generously offered to capture this video for us.

It wasn’t expected, but it was deeply appreciated.

And this, my friends, is what community looks like.

Then, as if the day wasn’t already full enough, he spoke a word over this assignment that I’ll carry with me:

“If you’re not scared, it ain’t big enough.”

I hear You, God.

Yesterday reminded me why Black & Bound exists. It’s about books, yes. But it’s also about building community, celebrating Black stories, supporting Black-owned businesses, and creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

What a beautiful day spent with beautiful Baddies in a community full of beautiful Black-owned businesses. 🖤📚

Peace and blessings to everyone I pray all is well. Read below and let’s have Church outside. No gimmicks, no games. We are all using our voice to stand up against gun violence in the city.

As we prepare for our June 7th gathering to pray for peace in Charlotte during Gun Violence Awareness Month, I’ve been studying a powerful truth throughout scripture:

Peace is not just the absence of violence. Peace is the presence of GOD.

In the Torah, GOD tells Israel:

“If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments… then I will give peace in the land.” (Leviticus 26:3-6)

Notice the order:

➡️ Obedience
➡️ Alignment with GOD
➡️ Peace in the land

The Bible teaches that peace is connected to righteousness, justice, humility, and reverence for GOD. When a people drift from those things, confusion, division, and unrest often follow.

Then we see one of the most powerful examples in the life of King Jehoshaphat.

When multiple armies came against Judah, he didn’t start with military strategy.

He called for:
🙏 Prayer
🙏 Fasting
🙏 Worship
🙏 Unity

He gathered the people and declared:

“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.” (2 Chronicles 20:12)

Then GOD responded:

“The battle is not yours, but GOD’S.”

Jehoshaphat sent the worshippers out first. Not the warriors.

As they praised GOD, the enemy was defeated, and scripture says:

“The realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet; for his GOD gave him rest on every side.” (2 Chronicles 20:30)

The pattern is clear:

Fear ➡️ Humility ➡️ Prayer ➡️ Worship ➡️ GOD Moves ➡️ Peace Follows

This is why we are gathering on June 7th.

Not for a protest.
Not for a performance.

But to seek the face of GOD, pray for our city, honor families impacted by violence, and declare that JESUS CHRIST is still the Prince of Peace.

Charlotte doesn’t just need awareness.

Charlotte needs healing.

Charlotte needs prayer.

Charlotte needs peace.

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of GOD.” — Matthew 5:9

𝗡𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲.

The 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 conference was 3 months of planning and sacrifice that paid off to prove that 𝙋𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙄𝙨 𝙋𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 when men show up for one another. We’re planting seeds from Southwest Charlotte #Exit4 to the world. Deepest gratitude to the team and panelists—you all poured so much into this and made it an absolute win.
