✨ ETERNAL – “WHAT’CHA GONNA DO” ✨

27 YEARS AGO TODAY, on 18th October 1999, Eternal released “What’cha Gonna Do” — a landmark moment in the group’s history as sisters @EastherBennett and @VernieBennett entered a new chapter as a DUO! 🎤💿

🔥 THE CHART STATS

🇬🇧 UK Singles Chart: 16
🇬🇧 UK R&B Singles Chart: 4
🇯🇵 Japan: 29
🇳🇱 Netherlands: 30
🇸🇪 Sweden: 34
🇩🇪 Germany: 84

💫 Following Kéllé Bryan’s departure, the track marked Eternal’s first and only single released as a duo. Written by Easther and Vernie Bennett, this smooth R&B offering became the lead and only single from their self-titled fourth and final studio album, Eternal, released in November 1999.

Although it narrowly missed the UK Top 15, “What’cha Gonna Do” reached No. 16 and became Eternal’s final UK Top 20 hit — closing a remarkable chapter for one of Britain’s most successful R&B girl groups of the ’90s. 🖤

From Stay to I Wanna Be the Only One, Eternal gave us timeless vocals, unforgettable harmonies and a catalogue that still deserves its flowers. 🌹

💬 REAL ETERNAL FANS — WHAT DO YOU THINK OF “WHAT’CHA GONNA DO”? Was the duo era underrated? And do you wish we’d heard more music from Easther and Vernie together?

I got asked to dig out some ‘Pop Idol’ memories from the archive.

This pic with Will Young was taken at Capital FM when the ‘battle bus’ brought him in to do promotion in the week before the final.

I looked after him and he had no problem with me getting a photo…on the condition he could have one too. Swipe to see who with ➡️

When I took Will up to the office he noticed Brandy was already in our studio recording an interview.

He asked ever so politely if he could grab a pic with her…and I took this snap on my camera for him.📸

I printed it out and framed it and gave it to him next time he came in for an interview. Maybe it’s still on his wall at home - who knows 🤣🤣🤣?

As you can see, when he went in the studio to do his interview with Dr. Fox he was accompanied by a lot of cameramen, photographers and press. 🎥 Foxy was obviously a judge on the show at the time.

The Pop Idol final was dominating all media that week. It was massive.

Gareth Gates popped in later in the week on his ‘battle bus’. He staged a ‘fight’ over a platinum disc for the cameras with our programme controller at Capital FM, Jeff Smith! 👊🏼

I produced Foxy’s drivetime show live from backstage at Wembley on the Pop Idol tour. All the finalists came in for an interview. 🎤

At the time, I was properly crushing on Korben. 😍

Jessica Garlick was the absolute sweetest when she came on air 👑

She, of course, went on to represent the UK at Eurovision and finished 3rd in 2002 with ‘Come Back’.

I got on with her so well that she randomly came to my birthday party that year…along with Hayley Evetts from the show.

Also pictured in the background here - at the party - is a boyband member of the era….you deserve full marks if you know who?…..

It was Shane from Irish boyband, D-Side!

I’ve only got one pic from Series 2 and that is backstage in the Green Room at the ITV studios with the winner, Michelle McManus.

Here’s my ticket for the first live show of series 1. I found it in an old scrap book I’ve kept.

Many years later, I bumped into Gareth Gates again in Avoriaz in France 🇫🇷 He was DJing at Snowbo
