I have never really felt the urge to reflect on a calendar year externally. I’ve indeed done so internally, but to share my experiences unfiltered and to show vulnerability publicly is something I have avoided. Until I said “Fuck it” and decided to speak from a soapbox for awhile so bear with me.

Time itself is a human construct and change is inevitable (no matter what the calendar says). Even though I was aware of this, I was not prepared for the roller coaster that was 2025. I experienced a significant paradigm shift. My perspective, lifestyle and worldview were all warped into something new, something beautiful. What unfolded from it all can best be described in one word: gratitude.

I’m grateful that through it all, I had my friends and family by my side while I faced these challenges. I’m grateful for the high highs and the low lows. I’m grateful I’ve joined a band where I feel a real sense of brotherhood, union and purpose. I’m grateful that I’ve been in a sober headspace to endure heartbreak, loss, pain, suffering…. Im grateful that I got to share the joy of music with my Uncle’s second grade class. I’m grateful a good friend of mine hooked it up with floor tickets to Metallica and Pantera and I walked away with some proof of my attendance there. I’m grateful I got to meet my heroes in Primus and bring my Uncle along; a full circle experience since the first concert I ever attended was Primus with him back in 2011 (that concert was the catalyst for me to begin my musical journey). I’m grateful I found more about my ancestry and I got my hands on a Moldovan coin with my 3x great grandfather’s face plastered on it. And I’m grateful that I learned to not touch your vehicle’s coolant reservoir when it’s hot (PSA: You will end up in the emergency room)…

Bring it on 2026. I’m ready to take you on one day at a time…

⭐️ TEACHER FEATURE ⭐️

M R . N E I L S O N

Next up is Mr. Neilson. He is a 3rd grade teacher who continues to be on our PBIS Tier 1 team, this year as the team Lead. He also hosted an after school program for his students this year.

If you don’t already know this, Mr. Neilson is an artist. We asked him to share with us all how he weaves art into his teaching and how he shared his love for art with his students.

He loves helping students explore their creativity in and out of the classroom. He tries to help them think outside of the box and encourages them to embrace their creativity. He enjoys seeing them create without feeling judged and without comparing themselves to others. Mr. Neilson reminds them to always be themselves and to celebrate that they are all unique individuals.

He also shared that he “feels so blessed to be able to work at El Gabilan.” where he gets to make learning fun and exciting for students. He looks forward to coming to work everyday and get to see all of his amazing students.

Lastly he wanted to share, “For the last 13 years I have called El Gabilan my family and I am so thankful to be able to work with such an amazing and supportive people.”
