A year ago, we introduced Je Me Souviens as the founding Ready-to-Wear collection for Improper Identity.

Over the past few months, I had the opportunity to revisit this collection; which was inspired by my late grandmother, María del Carmen. In 1969, my grandmother brought her family from Cuba and managed to build a new life in America with nothing, all while raising five children.

The collection was titled Je Me Souviens, a phrase I found on a trip to Quebec, where it’s symbolizes keeping memories alive and leaving them for the next generation to carry forward. I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to pay respect to the sacrifices she made to create such an incredible opportunity for all of us.

One of the most recognizable details from the collection is the Key Zipper Puller on our Zip-Through Hoodie. That key is an exact replica of the one that opened the doors to María’s home; a place filled with memories, family, and joy.
