Where you bought your music in Jersey City.
Before streaming, it all moved through counters across the city. Record shops, electronics stores, clothing spots, corner stands. Mixtapes, 45s, LPs, and the singles this city pressed itself.

The Heights and Central Ave had JTB, Jon Roc Music, and Central Avenue Electronics. Journal Square had Music Station. Hudson Mall had Wow Records. Downtown had On the Ave. MLK Drive had Daddy O’s and KD’s, and Daddy O’s 2 sat right next door to Stan’s Square Records. The West Side had Street Fashions. Bergen Avenue had Pro Sounds. Bayonne had Showtime and 21st Street Electronics.

The music crossed the river too. Jersey City tapes were sold at the Harlem tables on 145th Street and up by the Apollo.

And the city made its own. Catamount pressed the 45s. Mel-O Records ran out of 94 Union Street and put out Double XX Posse’s first single. Double J paid for Cannibal Town himself in 1988 and pressed 3,000 copies. Stan’s Square Records held that counter from 1965 until it closed in 2018.

Where did you buy yours? Name the spot in the comments. If we missed one, we will add it to the record.

Jersey City music history: the famous #1 artists actually from Jersey City.

Kool & the Gang formed on a Jersey City street corner in 1964. Nancy Sinatra, The Manhattans, P.M. Dawn, Marilyn McCoo, and Blondie’s Frank Infante — all from Jersey City. Six decades of chart-topping Jersey City music, from doo-wop and soul to hip-hop.

We built the cited encyclopedia of it all: 228 entries and counting — the Chilltown mixtape DJs, the rappers, the producers, the record labels. Every claim sourced. Every entry permanent.

And the names the internet gets wrong? Queen Latifah is Newark. Lauryn Hill is South Orange. We cite everything.

Who’d we miss? 👇 Full archive — link in bio.
