A little while back, I had the opportunity to serve on the worship team of a church with a primarily Brazilian population, so everything was in Portuguese. I played with the band for the worship and I was honoured when they asked me to continue to play throughout the service, but not being a Portuguese speaker, it was an experience that reminded me that we, as musicians, have to be very alert to what was going on around us during worship.

🎹Here are three skills that worship musicians should develop.

📌Listen with your eyes.
Observe what's going on and what needs to be facilitated within that portion of the service.
🔸Is there a leader that's stepping forward to pray?
🔸Is it a prayer of intimacy with God?
🔸What kind of music is needed at that moment?
🔸If it’s a moment of powerful, prophetic prayer, then how will you back that up?
🔸What is the worship team co-ordinator asking for?

📌Serve the moment.
Ask yourself, what kind of musical backing would serve this moment best. As an instrumentalist, I know my instrument well, allowing me to manipulate my keyboard for different moments.
🔸Do I need an organ? Do I need a piano or electric piano, synth, or a drum pad? If you're a guitarist or a drummer, it’s the same thing, because you can easily do a disservice to the moment when you dominate or you don't do what's required.

📌Less is often more.
If you dominate the moment rather than serve the moment, you can often do too much, and this is the trap that a lot of musicians fall into. They play over the top of what is required. We are there to serve so, in order for less to be more, we need to decrease that Christ might increase.

🔸Listen with your eyes, 🔸serve the moment, and 🔸decrease that God might increase.
Praise and peace.

As individuals we were very independent able to go where we pleased and do as we wished but as a pair it is not quite the same anymore, we are bound to the conventions of necessity bound to our genetic makeup of a) guarding / providing or b) submitting to our better half, each thinking better of the other because it is not us which is the one which overcame all our faults to come and say that we are deserving of being loved. Bound to the perceptions of society. Bound to new obligations by the other person, unknown expectations that might not have been dealt with or escaped their notice to come in and control the relationship.
.
.
.
These non-negotiables become the bedrock of a healthy and strong relationship as both individuals get to know each other’s boundaries in the early stage. The fun part is dating the hard part is fighting and if the dating (getting to know each other) is too fun and not intentional enough the fighting would soon proceed because the bond surpasses the understanding. A relationship is not only fun but serious and should be viewed with frequent contemplation apart from the times of enjoyment. Each individual needs to assess the person they are with, why they are there and what is required of them.
.
.
.
Reflect:
How you are bound?
.
.
By necessity (is your partner ill? Are they in debt?)
.
.
By genetics are you unwilling to love or submit to the other person?
.
.
By unclear / clear “bound”-aries?
By unsupervised expectations (negotiable)
.
.
By non-negotiables (expectations)
.
.
By parental obligations (more in Asia)
.
.
By moral obligations
.
.
By weaknesses of your partner
.
.
Pray:
Dear God, we thank you for our partner and all the wonderful things he / she brings to our life’s it is indeed a delight that they are now here with us, and our life is the better for it. God, we want to grow as a couple and to develop in Your image, help us to know You so that we may grow more and more in love with You and each other. We vow to give you all the praise and glory, in Jesus name we pray,
Amen.
