POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A post worthy of the grid! The September issue of @elledecor is finally here and worth the wait. Seen here - @martinbrulestudio opens the door to his Manhattan home, a longtime creative laboratory he recently reimagined. For his own apartment, he transformed the space into a soaring studio, putting the bed at the center and surrounding it with art, antiques, and rich materials. Incredible photography by @edeani and words by @gaygassmann. Thank you @stellenevolandes @elisalipskykarasz @kj_fitzpatrick for your trust and inspiration. ♥️

I keep a big plastic box of magazine clippings under my bed, stories I've either written or commissioned and edited in my almost 14 years at the magazine that has just turned 180. A blip in T&C's history, but I often think--well, especially when I rummage in that oversized analog scrapbook--how big they loomed for me, and how much I loved reporting, writing, and editing them. About Tetiaroa, Marlon Brando's island off Tahiti; about the week spent cheek by jowl with Prince Harry in Malawi, translocating elephants; Egypt, twice; a cruise around Greenland and its melting glaciers; what I learned about space travel during a weekend in the New Mexican desert hanging out with the crew and astronauts of a Virgin Galactic spaceship; @jaymcinerney 's recent piece about his near-death experience; Anne Higonnet's learned, groundbreaking takes on style and fashion; absolutely everything I had the immense pleasure of working on with @adamgopnik7709 . I could go on and on. I have no doubt my colleagues here @townandcountrymag have their own, albeit surely digital, stashes of pieces that gave them joy. And that speaks to T&C's ambitious, eclectic, sassy, omnivorous core that over these 18 decades has served it so well. "Sto lat," as we Poles say at birthdays, washing it down with vodka. It means "one hundred years." As in, "may he , she, or they live another 100." And thank you @jayfielden @stellenevolandes

The Breakers has always been a rare refuge where one of America’s most storied families lived just out of view, its most intimate spaces kept entirely private for generations. Open to the public since 1948, it is more museum than home. But hidden away on the third floor, beneath the eaves of the expansive roof, is another Breakers—one that, until recently, remained closed even as visitors passed below. With the departure of the Vanderbilt family from the property in 2018, the Preservation Society of Newport County, which has owned the ‘cottage’ since 1972, is in the midst of restoring this third-floor aerie—now open to the public as part of a ticketed tour. In our April issue, we go upstairs, into the previously unseen rooms of the American icon.

Elsewhere in the issue, @ian_frisch answers why some parents choose to send their kids to tech-forward alternative schools; Jesse Hyde reports on the scandal shaking up the luxury real-estate world; @jamierosennyc weighs in on the rise of a certain nostalgic aesthetic procedure; and yours truly introduces you to fancy pawnbroker @bygoldgirl and, elsewhere, investigates that most finicky of body parts, the skin barrier. Plus, T&C’s ninth annual Hotel Awards, which celebrates the new classics in luxury hospitality 🥂

The @elledecor breakfast at the @taniabulhoes showroom this morning felt like spring, which felt like the right time to bring out the @iliaslalaounis egg charms. Too soon or just right? @elledecor #tabletop @taniabulhoes

When I was in Mexico last week I was sad to learn that the artist and designer Pedro Friedeberg died on March 5 at the age of 90. I haven’t seen any coverage but the Mexico City-based Surrealist had been having a huge revival for his artwork and hand-shaped chair. In 2020, I commissioned NYT reporter Elisabeth Malkin to visit the artist at his jam packed townhouse in Roma for a feature in Elle Decor. His rooms were lined with mirrors and filled with everything from architectural models of impossible towers to artwork by Man Ray and Leonora Carrington and what he called “pseudocolonial sculptures” of angels. And of course, his own subversive furniture. Writes Malkin: “When he studied architecture in the 1950s, Le Corbusier’s functionalist maxim that a house is a machine for living held sway. By contrast, Friedeberg believes that the purpose of a home ‘is to make you laugh.’” It’s a great story and portrait of this irrepressible and influential artist, seen here in wonderful photos by @michelfiguet. Thanks to @nelidamortensen for discovering this one. @pedrofriedeberg #surrealism #mexicandesign

Google AI tells me the word “broad” is offensive to women, but if that’s the case I say let’s reclaim it. At the @townandcountrymag offices there are few compliments higher than being called “a real broad”—funny, strong, real, unafraid to speak your mind. So here’s to our March issue cover star, a real broad if there ever was one: @sandragbernhard 🌟🌟🌟
