Buying your first piece doesn’t need to be complicated. It can be as simple as finding a piece that stops you: a color that matches a memory, a subject that makes you laugh, a texture you want to live with. After all, art is, and should be, intensely personal. Here, our team has combed Foundations for the works under $2,500 we can’t stop thinking about. This painting was made by one of my dearest friends and my sibling arranged I got it for my birthday last year. 💛

I love the atmosphere of it, as though it transports me to a different place and time that I can’t quite grasp but feels warm and like homecoming.

Although I definitely wouldn’t describe myself as Catholic or typically Christian, it also reminds me of a story in the bible.
In the traditional version of the story, a shepherd has 100 sheep. One day, one sheep goes missing. The shepherd leaves his 99 sheep to find the one who’s gone astray. The shepherd is happy when he finds it and takes it home again (happier than with the 99 who’ve never gone astray). In this version, the sheep is interpreted as a “sinner” who is brought back to their senses.. I’m not fond of this version.

There is also a relatively newer interpretation of the story (people have been critical of the traditional testament for as long as it has existed), where the sheep who’s gone astray is regarded as the brave one who dares to leave the flock in search of their own path. The shepherd actually loves the sheep the most who dares to take the leap, which is why he goes after it. And although I don’t believe in favouritism, I do think that’s quite beautiful.
