📘 Lazarus: The First Collection 📘

Rucka. Lark. Arcas.

I am quite literally appalled that in the few years that we've been running this page, nobody has told me to check out Lazarus - shame on you people.

Now that I've read it, this is up there amongst some of my favourite comic series.

Set in a dystopian future where sixteen wealthy, dynastic Families rule the world, Lazarus: The First Collection follows Forever "Eve" Carlyle, a genetically enhanced, near-immortal protector "Lazarus" of the ruling Carlyle Family.

This book collects the arcs "Family" & "Lift", both high stakes, high octane storylines - where Forever will be forced to question her reality and existence.

Seriously, a ridiculously good read that I struggled to put down. The bonus material in this collection compliments the story's already insanely good world building. Just the level of detail that's been considered when creating this is something I've rarely seen in comics.

I'd flat out recommend this book, especially if you're into badass female characters like Sarah Connor or Ellen Ripley.

🛸 I Want To Believe 👽

Happy Freaking Friday, conspiracy nuts!

That's right, Cal's back again with another scifi graphic novel that'll make you want to break out those tin foil hats and question what exactly the government's are hiding from you!

This week's read is Blue Book Library Edition by James Tynion IV from @darkhorsecomics. Not to be confused with a Blue Movie, which I recently found out was code for a porn flick. Although both include scenes involving a group of men wrist-deep inside a lifeless body, so you'd be forgiven for getting the two mixed up.

Blue Book is about the real life U.S military project of the same name which involved uncovering the truth behind the sightings of U.F.O's between the early 1950's and late 1960's. The whole book reads out in the style of a documentary, so if you enjoy watching the some 4 million alien/UFO/abduction documentaries on TV then this is right up your street.

The artwork is a minimalists wet dream with simple yet captivating pages and all done in different shades of Blue, which is really inkeeping with the theme. All in all its a solid read.

🏆 NEW ACHIEVEMENT! HERD MENTALITY! 🏆

YOU'RE INCAPABLE OF THINKING FOR YOURSELF, SO YOU FOLLOW THE FLOCK. YOU'VE SUCCUMB TO THE MARKETING PLOY OF THE ALGORITHM FLOODING YOUR FEED WITH "INFLUENCERS" READING A BOOK YOU HAD NO CLUE EXISTED A WEEK AGO, AND YOU'VE ALREADY SPENT YOUR HARD EARNED GOLD ON THE COMPLETE COLLECTION.

YOUR REWARD, YOU'VE DISCOVERED THE INCREDIBLY FUN LITRPG / PROGRESSION FANTASY SERIES, DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL.

GramGang, Happy MotherDucking Hump Day!
How's everyone been?

I've had my head buried in Dungeon Crawler Carl books the last week or so, devouring this first book in only a couple of days - I couldn't put it down.
It's quite unlike anything I've ever read before. The characters are excellent, Carl & Princess donut's back and forth banter makes for some giggles and the whole video game mechanic references had me smiling throughout. Now that I'm a little deeper into the series, I feel like you can sense the overarching plot and stakes of this world building, opening up like a typical video game might beyond it's tutorial section - which is very much how this first book feels.

This is not your high-level fantasy read, something like the complexities of Malazan. It's a tongue in cheek popcorn read, where you can kick back and just get lost in a world of fun characters, deadly drug dealing llamas and an AI with a rather bizarre foot fetish. I needed something like this between the Witcher series and my next read... Care to take a guess what that'll be? There's a hint somewhere.

Have you read Dungeon Crawler Carl?
What did you think?

Another Fluffing I Hate Fairyland Post!?

Happy Saturday, Guys and Gals, and also a Happy Valentines Day to all you cute couples spreading your cooties about today!

Aside from being showered with flowers, chocolates and a bombardment of secret love letters (yeah right), I've decided to pop open a bottle of DMF and open up my copy of I Hate Fairyland Book 2.

A few weeks back I posted about picking up Book 1 and after finishing it I was very pleased with the fact that I went out on a limb and bought Book 2 (and possibly 3. Keep your eyes peeled) at the same time.

Aside from the great humour and story, the one thing that's absolutely peak in these books is the artwork. Vibrant colours and detailed destruction make this one of my favourite graphic novels to look at so far.

🌍🔨World of Black Hammer Vol. 2🔨🌍

What's up GramGang?! At some point last year I'd started collecting and reading the Black Hammer series. Loved mainline Vol. 1 with all its mystery and intrigue, but found Vol. 2 just fell into another typical multiversal superhero story.

Jumping back in where I left off, World of Black Hammer Vol. 2... Meh, wasn't massively fussed on this one either to be completely honest. A tale of two halves. Like WOBH Vol. 1 this consists of two stories, Black Hammer '45 and The Quantum Age.

'45 is a war story - basically how WWII went down in this universe. Just didn't vibe with this at all, the art really tested me, incredibly weak in my opinion. Struggled to distinguish which character was which throughout.
The Quantum Age was better (though still not the highs of mainline Vol. 1). This does the alternative to '45, rather than delve into the past, it jumps a thousand years into the future, which was much more intriguing (even if it stayed a bit more typical superhero). It might just have kept me interested in the rest of the series.... I bought them all anyway (you can see in the pic), so they're getting read regardless 😂

Thoughts on Black Hammer?

🔨 What The Fluff! 🧸

Howdy, Gram-gang! It's been a while.

So last time I posted, which was a freaking while ago, I said that I'd just jumped on the hype train and started collecting deluxe editions/omnibus'. So far its been fun... not on my wallet though.

Having a little look at what to buy next, I came across I Hate Fairyland by Scottie Young. A quick read of the synopsis came back with "Six year old Gertrude has been stuck in the magical Fairyland for 27 years. Un-aging and with a violent streak, Gert will hack and slash her way through anything and anyone to find her way home"

As a father of a daughter who is well into her terrible two's, this book didn't just jump out to me. It flew at me face first! This weekend I'll be blazing my way through Vol.1 and, who knows, maybe I've already took a gamble and bought volumes 2 & 3 already. You'll have to stick around to find out.

Two Remastered Classics, Two sweet Black Friday deals, and two games I’ve never played.

I’ve played Resident Evil Biohazard and Village and have always heard 4 is the best in the series. I’ve never played a Metal Gear Solid game, but @nerd_without_order says it’s pretty great, and I trust his opinions usually lol. I also love Cold War Espionage and I’ve heard Snake is a product of that era.

I also picked up Hades and Dishonored digitally, so I have lots to play now.

"Ambition comes with a price attached"

So after seeing all you book/comic/anime lovers praise this book I thought why not give it a go. I present to you my first manga, Berserk Deluxe Edition Volume 1.

Not going to lie, I felt a bit intimidated by manga, mostly coming from not having a clue what order the panels should be read but I'm so glad I jumped right in with this one.

Berserk follows Guts, a guy that comes across as a bit of a knob but who has been forged through negative experiences in his past. With a mysterious symbol branded upon him that seems to bring the forces of darkness to him.

This one volume has made me want to find more out about Guts and his history so be prepared to see the other volumes being posted on here.

Any other manga I should dip my toe into?

Let me know in the comments below

Where The Body Was
Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips

Brubaker, Phillips and a "who done it?" Set in 80's suburban America - What more could you want?

I really appreciate the narrative choice this book made, telling the story from a variety of characters' perspectives in that post-event docu series kind of way, it's not something I'd personally seen done in a comic before (let me know if there are others though!).

Story itself twists and turns, as always the level of depth to these characters is the highlight, nobody feels underdeveloped. It's a quick read, keeps you engaged throughout, my only complaint is it feeling a tad anticlimactic in the end. But it's not about the destination, it's about the journey as they say.

Artwork, Sean's still my favourite artist in the game - definitely no complaints here.

The Last God

Happy Wednesday, Gramsters!

A few weeks back I decided to pick up a copy of this absolutely gorgeous graphic novel, The Fellspyre Chronicles: Book 1, which collects the entire run of The Last God by Phillip Kennedy Johnson.

The book plunges you into a deep and dark fantasy world with a gripping story about two different bands of heroes fighting the same threat 30 years apart. Between each chapter there are small stories, poems, musical verses and other bits of lore that add to its almost Tolkien level of world building. Also the slipcase folds out into a huge, incredible drawn out map of the entire lands of Cain Anuun in which the book is set.

The artwork by Federici is also something worth mentioning with its grotesque creatures, desolate landscapes and high fantasy architecture that blends really well with Johnson's storytelling.

On a little side note, apart from my Dark Souls and Bloodborne collections, this is my first ever hardcover and I think I've already caught the itch. I NEED MORE!

☂️ Tales from The Umbrella Academy ☂️
🪦 You Look Like Death 🪦

Happy Friday instageeks.
What's the weekend plans?

I've recently finished reading You Look Like Death and I have to say, I think I preferred this to the mainline Umbrella Academy.

Does the plot still feel like Gerard Way doing his best Grant Morrison impression, yes, but I think it benefits from focussing on Klaus rather than the whole UA. The smaller, self contained stakes make this a little more cohesive than that third mainline instalment. Or do we have Shaun Simon to thank for steering this one in the right direction?

One of my favourite things about The Umbrella Academy is Ba's art, but honestly, I think Cullbard's done an excellent job here. It really pops and the colouring smacks you in the face, it has to with the cover of this book being so bold. It looks f-ing wicked on a shelf by the way.

Happy Friday Eve! 👋🏼

Almost the weekend, Gang.
Not so much for me, I've had the week off, basking in the glorious British sun at a hot tub hideaway.

Besides feeling like my nuts are in a furnace, I've managed to pick up and read Radiant Black Massive Edition Vol. 1 by Higgins, Costa & Carey.

Bought this on a bit of a whim and I'll be honest, I'm not sure where I stand on it. The art is f*cking outstanding, I'll say that. And I loved the issue 5 switch up (IYKYK) but something just feels... Missing?

I love me some good character depth and I think Higgins has done a pretty neat job in this department. Particularly the issue exploring how Satomi got her powers and her backstory. But am I the only one who read this constantly asking, "So what's the threat?", "where the F have these black holes come from?", "why didn't I think of that bath bomb idea?".
I don't know, sure, we had 001... But that was it?
It just felt like the book was constantly building to almost nothing.

Without spoiling, is this series all fart, no poo? What's the deal?

Also, been debating the MMPR run from Higgins at Boom, worth it or?
