Every comic fan has an origin story. Steve sat down with Joe from @nerdalertsmedia at @kovaldistillery to talk about how Joe discovered comics in his 30s, why he started Nerd Alerts, what keeps him coming back to the medium and how the comic book community has become such a meaningful part of his life.

If you’ve ever wondered how someone becomes a comic fan, or why we keep collecting, this one’s for you.

What’s your comic book origin story?

I saw @nerdalertsmedia Signature Sunday post and decided that I would like to help with this trend. He had a few comics double signed and here is one of mine. This is Daredevil volume 2 issue 9 signed by @davidmackkabuki and @joequesada.

Bela Con 5 was the best one yet 📚 🎉 Had an absolute blast selling books and sharing pieces of our collection, hanging with talented artists, catching up with our vendor friends and spending the day surrounded by the Chicago comic book community. One of our favorite things about comics is that they bring people together and Bela Con keeps proving that year after year.
Huge thanks to @belascomics and everyone who stopped by, chatted comics, shared stories and made the day memorable. Can’t wait for Bela Con 6 💫

Had a blast at Bela Con 5!
Such a great time slinging comics and meeting so many great people from the Chicago collector community. Sold a bunch of great comics with Pete from his @basementofevilchicago and was honored to be a guest of @belascomics for the @thegenxgeekspodcast and @thisweekingeek_twig
Thanks to everyone who made this such a fun event and who stopped over to share some love for my man Pete and my pods and pages. Met so many great people and grabbed so many great items at incredible prices.
Can’t wait to see you all again at the next one.
I tried to tag everyone I could but if I forgot feel free to tag yourself in the comments.

Yo! Sometimes the world's against you and sometimes it's on your side. This morning I slept through a text asking me if I wanted to send at Bela Con 5. By the time I got it up, it was too late. All good.

I head to the show, I forget my blanks for sketches, Vic forgets a tee and some stickers but we figure it out. Anyway, had I worked the show I probably wouldn't have had the chance to walk the floor or chat with everyone.

Last but not least, @zombieunicorncomics for the great deals. As luck would have it they recently bought a #Daredevil collection and your boy picked up a lot of books he needed for his #daredevilrun! It almost felt like cheating. I'll make an update soon but I've got to be getting down to 20 or 30 left. #LFG #comicbookinstagram #chicagocomicbookcommunity

Great seeing everyone out at the 38th Annual Anniversary Sale at @atlascomicschi today! Good to see a small chunk of Bela Con vendors out hunting deals and supporting one of Chicagoland’s best comic shops. Plenty of pickups were made and I’ll have a haul video dropping tomorrow!

Huge thanks to John and the crew at Atlas for letting me put up Bela Con 5 posters and help spread the word!

We’re now under 3 weeks away from Bela Con 5! Chicago’s Comic & Toy Show returns Saturday June 6th with free admission, creators, vendors, exclusives and more. Hope to see some new faces there!
