POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Jeff Stanford and I have plenty of opinions about horror movies. For Episode 25 of Nerdspresso Phase II, we invited someone who could challenge a few of them: Jeff’s son, Tate.

Tate’s a big fan of “Obsession” and “Backrooms,” and he joined us for a conversation about what makes these movies connect with his generation, what two older nerds see in them, and why a familiar horror premise can still leave you rattled. Slasher scares, time travel, and peak ’80s nostalgia. “Totally Killer” sends Kiernan Shipka back to 1987 to stop a masked murderer, with plenty of snark along the way.

Jeff Stanford’s verdict: “This flick is totally worth a watch.”

HBO was on all night. Mom had to sleep sometime. 📺🍿

This week’s Nerdspresso revisits “Night Shift,” the 1982 comedy pairing Henry Winkler’s nervous charm with Michael Keaton’s glorious chaos, and remembers when watching an R-rated movie meant keeping the volume low and listening for footsteps.

What movie did you sneak-watch after your parents went to bed? Tell us in the comments.

Sometimes you just want to watch a foul-mouthed Betty White feed a cow to a 30-foot crocodile.

Jeff Stanford revisits Lake Placid, the wonderfully confused 1999 combination of horror movie, comedy, and Jaws knockoff.

The creature feature has an unusually talented cast, sharp dialogue from David E. Kelley, and a massive animatronic crocodile created by Stan Winston. It never quite decides whether it wants to frighten you or make you laugh, but everyone involved seems to be having a terrific time.

Jeff calls it a prime example of what happens when smart people make a dumb movie.

Writes Jeff in the latest Nerdspresso column for Southpoint Access: "It was hard not to love Dolly Parton. Even if you weren’t a fan of her music, her bodacious style and boundless enthusiasm were impossible to resist. One of the few celebrities who walked the walk, Dolly quietly made a difference by sharing her wealth and love for humanity. She never forgot her humble roots, which influenced her decisions throughout her life and career. Her philanthropy affected literacy, healthcare, and disaster relief not just in our country, but the world over. She made us believe that some famous people are as good as they present themselves to be. Dolly was larger than life. Her recent passing has hit me really hard. Yes, she’s a cultural icon and a national treasure, but Dolly Parton was part of the family."

Would you rather face a bull shark inside a flooded cave or spend your vacation listening to rich recent graduates talk about their future social media careers?

After watching The Devil’s Mouth, Jeff Stanford isn’t entirely sure.

Prime Video’s new shark thriller offers beautiful Thai scenery, slick underwater photography, plenty of fins and teeth, and a cast Jeff describes as “more like menu items than people.”

Think Jaws meets Gossip Girl on The Beach, with a little St. Elmo’s Fire and Jaws 2 thrown into the chum bucket.

Welcome to Oak Street, where the lawns are tidy, the families are complicated, and the dinosaurs are hungry. 🦖

For his latest Nerdspresso column, Jeff Stanford took paleontologist and longtime podcast partner Jimmy Waldron to a preview of The End of Oak Street at the Orlando Science Center.

Jeff found a popcorn adventure somewhere between Spielberg, Bradbury, Poltergeist, and Jurassic Park. Jimmy found scientifically questionable dinosaurs, awkward prehistoric romance, and further evidence that everything has feathers now.

Writes Jeff in this column: "This movie jettisons the tricked-out nanotech suit from the previous sequels in favor of homemade togs, which creates a more authentic vibe. While Peter still gets support from an AI assistant (voiced by Naomi Watts, who played his mom in The Impossible), he’s mostly surviving on his wits and spider sense here. This movie also has a faster pace and grittier look. We can thank its new director, Destin Daniel Cretton, for this boost."
