In addition to working on Pizza Posse, I had a fun little side project going on for @nerdymewzings - that's in the bag. This marks 70 sequential pages of comics for me this year. Almost 300 pages in 2 years. Endless comics to come, I'm only getting started. Thanks for coming along this wild journey with me 🩷🤘🍕

The first line of The Iliad contains the Ancient Greek word “menis,” meaning godlike anger. That word is used exclusively with Achilles in Homer’s work. And this is significant because in the Iliad, Homer often uses same terms to refer to both gods and mortals, such as “white arms” in reference to both Helen and Hera—a reference Hera’s divine nature and Helen’s goddess-like appearance.

Yet it goes further, Homer mentions basic emotions as gods. Such as Sleep and Death. Now, one could say he didn’t mean to deify them. Yet I would counter that, while Plato lived just before the Hellenistic era, long after the dark ages that Homer lived in ended, that Plato calling love a god (or a spirit in Socrates’s portion) in The Symposium is indicative of a mythological understanding thoughout the broader scope of Greek history.

Bringing this to the Iliad, Achilles wants revenge on Hektor after he kills Patroklos. Yet it was Achilles’s own anger that indirectly endangered the ships he lounged by when he beckoned Thetis to convince Zeus to punish Agamemnon on behalf of him. So when Patroklos goes and charges the Trojans in Book 16, his heart hardened also by the Greek storm father, he kills Sarpedon—a son of Zeus and likewise a friend of Hektor. Zeus is saddened by this and ultimately rescues Sarpedon’s body from the ensuing trampling it received by both sides.

So then Hektor’s anger at Patroklos was a symptom of Zeus’s own anger, likewise with Achilles’s at Hektor. Yet with Achilles it’s different. For his anger is the only in the epic that matches Zeus’s. Yet everyone is too wrapped in their own idea of heroism to see that they’re playing out the same yearnings across from the other. And this is why the Olympians are so split during it, and in constant chaos. Because they’re the very thought that is being channeled by the mortals.

Nietzche once posited that thought comes before all. That all perception is a symptom of thought and that the “I” before “think” is a delusional sentiment. One can even see in the Book of John, at the very beginning, that “The Word” was all there was. Then the Iliad is a tragedy in the sense that it explores the myopia of humanity.
